Bio:
Gained BSc(Hons) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Joined BBC as a video engineer. Moved into TV sound (studio, location, OBs, and post-production). Served attachments on-line video-editing news and features programmes. Invited to Lecture at BBC technical training centre and spent seven years training radio and TV sound staff at all levels for BBC and international broadcasters.

Began writing reviews and feature articles in spare time for pro-audio magazines from 1995. BBC down-sized training department and I accepted redundancy in 1997. Became freelance technical author, broadcast trainer, and consultant.

Appointed Technical Editor of SOS in 1997 and Editor of Line Up (IBS journal) 2000-2009. I also contribute to various trade magazines and websites associated with the broadcast industry, and continue to provide specialist training to broadcast companies around the world. I maintain practical currency by recording mostly acoustic performances on location, along with commissioned editing and mastering work.

Awarded an Honorary Doctor of Technology in 2019 by UWE (Bristol).
Interests:
Music, recording, listening and playing (classical organ, jazz organ, bass, theremin...) – but I have the decency not to inflict my talents on the public! Also enjoy photography, driving and family life...
