Re: Magazine availability is very poor

I can read a digital version if I’m looking for something using search for a particular term but I can’t read a digital article for pleasure. I also resent the dumbing down of articles when (apart from the older contributor’s articles) there’s rarely anything that I can’t find (often with more techn...

Re: Solid-looking MIDI USB box.. Has anyone tried this?

I've seen it with a single USB MIDI interface set-up, so some of those interfaces are just rubbish They play notes OK, but that's it. That's a very big generalisation from a very small sample of testing. No. Read what I’ve written in other posts in this thread. There’s a large number of posts on th...

Re: Solid-looking MIDI USB box.. Has anyone tried this?

We get quite a few people coming to the forums saying their MIDI device doesn’t work properly and can’t save patches etc. and 95% of the time it’s down to a cheap USB to MIDI converter. They buy something with a name on it and it works. Yes, some of the cheap ones work properly, but knowing which on...

Re: Non-magnetically shielded speakers - how bad can they be?

A lot of stainless steel alloys do have ferro-magnetic properties. It all depends on the crystal structure of the alloy You’d need to test with a magnet if you don’t know the type. Of the common stainless steel grades; Stainless steel grades 410, 420 and 440 are magnetic ‘martensitic’ stainless stee...

Re: Solid-looking MIDI USB box.. Has anyone tried this?

Though as we know from experience on this forum that a lot of the cheap USB/MIDI adapters don’t do Sysex properly, I’m struggling to understand why people are now saying otherwise. If you want one that definitely works for everything, get one with a known music manufacturer’s name on it. Otherwise y...

Though it does look like that particular model is always shipped from China, so maybe not as straightforward as I thought.

Re: Solid-looking MIDI USB box.. Has anyone tried this?

If you can find similar on Amazon then it's worth getting one to try with sysex messages and if it doesn't work then it's very easy to return, far more so than with eBay.

Re: How Can I Switch The Voltage On ALTO TS415 Speaker From 120 Volts To 240 Volts?

The speaker specs say 110v 50/60Hz and 230v 50/60Hz so mains frequency isn't an issue in this instance.

Re: How Can I Switch The Voltage On ALTO TS415 Speaker From 120 Volts To 240 Volts?

There are two possible reasons. 1. You can’t and the power supply is 110/120v only 2. It’s an automatically adjusting switch mode PSU, and it will work on 240v (but you’ll need to change the fuse for a T6.3AL one). From the description on the Alto web site, it’s not at all clear which it is. I think...

Re: Total Newbie. Please help!

So yes, get juiced up if you can. Don't forget an RCB on the feed. Dave. POI: RCD, unless there’s a hidden cricket connection I haven’t spotted. RCB = Residual Current Breaker. Just one of the terms used for the same protective device. Just as valid as RCD (Residual Current Device) and RCCB (Residu...

Re: Pitch shifter plugin

I don’t hear any pitch drop as the volume lowers in that video. He could be using a louder volume to trigger a higher pitch shift. A parallel FX path in the HX stomp with another pitch shifter in and noise gate which only opens on the louder playing. Listen closely – at the end of every note. I sti...

Re: Hex pickup to tab conversion (with open tunings)?

Apparently (from talk from the Boss stand at NAMM) there should be a couple more modules from Boss appearing this year using the GK5/5B pickup and the associated serial comms. I assume one will be a modelling unit. Something to look forward to?

Re: Hex pickup to tab conversion (with open tunings)?

Getting strings for a bass that you can tune an octave up won't be cheap. You'd have to raid the top strings of an 8-string set and you'd need to fit a new nut. Whilst you'd be looking at guitar string gauges (0.017" to 0.042" on the set I looked at) I don't think standard guitar strings w...
