Re: dB Warning Indicator

Re: Normalisation?

Minimising the noise recorded during capture would be why I'd want to use a decent expander on the way in. If you have troublesome noise on the way in I'd be looking to address the acoustic issues to prevent that unwanted noise reaching the mic long before reaching for an expander! Now, I've ...

Re: Recording Light

Question: how could a live studio recording light be connected to a DAW, so that the sign lights up whenever a recording is happening? It can generally be done using MIDI commands and a MIDI mains-switcher box... but I wouldn't recommend it. Far better in my experience, as Wonks says, to switch the ...

Re: Question on Snaking vs Running Mono/Stereo Lines and Colour Coding Conventions

I am in the process of hooking up two new 8 channel snakes and I started to wonder if there is a common colour to line sequence, in my mind with a little electronics training I am like do resistor colours make sense? There are numerous cable colour 'standards' — although none from the AES as far as ...

Re: Normalisation?

So the noise floor isn't going to go up when everything else does? Yes, of course it does, but the noise floor remains the same distance below the recorded signal peak. In other words, it's the noise floor you recorded, lifted up along with the signal in exactly the same way as if you'd pushed the ...

Re: Normalisation?

The company has changed hands several times over the years, but i assume you're thinking of when it filed for Chapter11 bankruptcy protection in 2018. It was then acquired by a new group of investors (KKR), restructured, and exited chapter 11 six months later.

Re: Powering a guitar pedal

Seems like a lot of people like the sound of bad engineering. You're missing my point, I suspect intentionally. If a customer want a pedal that introduces a particular flavour of distortion, design one to meet their needs... And, despite your earlier ludicrous comment, doing so would not be bad ...

Re: Line isolators/Mic switchs with pop noise

Tricky. If it's not a DC imbalance issue from phantom power then any improvement to the switch noise would require getting inside the mic and modifying it.... which would be difficult at best and potentially impossible. I think I'd sell the mics on and go back to the Sennheiser's you were previously ...

Re: Line isolators/Mic switchs with pop noise

There is a bunch of brand new switch dynamic microphones that I have to work with (AKG PS5) that make an audible pop noise when being switched on. Is phantom power switched on? Does it pop if phantom is switched off? I don't know if it comes from worse ground isolation ... It depends on how they've ...

Re: Powering a guitar pedal

Not a lot of room for any more components to make a voltage regulator. I can see bags of space for a simple discrete voltage regulator... and since they designed from scratch they could have made it any size necessary to do it properly, anyway! The simple truth is that the original designer didn't ...

Re: How to contact IAG : audiolab amp problem

I used to have an 8000A. Great amp. I sold it to a friend more than 30 years ago and its still going well. As I recall, the volume control is a typical ganged pot. Nothing special about it. I'm sure a bit of disassembly to get at it wont be too difficult. You can then read the brand and model ...

I believe if you message Neumann support with the serial no they can confirm if it's real or not. And models can evolve ...

Re: Powering a guitar pedal

Is 'bad engineering' the new phrase? No, it's a statement of fact. I was trained to design devices that worked consistently under all conditions, and to prevent or warn of any conditions outside normal parameters. That's what I consider 'good engineering'. We all know that battery voltage declines ...

Re: Normalisation?

So too fast recovery time on a compressor very obviously modulated the tape hiss in a really annoying way under speech. It was a cardinal rule beaten ...

My Brain just doesn’t take in things like this... Imagine you need to copy a vinyl disc to a cassette recorder. Re: Normalisation?

Depends on the D/A alignment and the analogue signal level. With pro and semipro interfaces, most can put out +20dBu or more, which is an analogue voltage of 21V peak-to-peak. -1dBFS through a SMPTE-aligned converter is 31V pk-pk! These are big signal levels for op-amps and even some discrete ...

Re: Normalisation?

Probably right. Nothing probable about it. The K-man is spot on. Normalising is just a gain change. Assuming the DAW does its sums properly (and dithers correctly) it has no audible effect other than volume. And definitely no change in dynamics. It's a long time ago since I used it at all... Ah ...
