Re: Forum very slow
Yep, a large % of corporates are using automated AI Chat Bots for all of their customer-facing "customer service" enquiries... at least, the initial wave until it loops round to the fork that says "pass to a human to resolve".

Re: Forum very slow
We already use Captcha but it's not a great tool... these AI companies are clued-up. Apologies everyone, yet again SOS site and the knowledge buried inside this SOS Forum is being scraped hourly by Bots. Our WebDev does block them but it is an endless, thankless task. We are exploring options. Your ...

Re: GAK have closed their shop
My initial reaction was that their margins were minuscule but they have paid 54 staff and 4 directors salaries before that profit is calculated and I'll bet part of the reason the 'profit' is so small it to minimise their corporation tax burden (they only paid corporation tax on £9000 of 'profit' ...

Impact of US tariffs on gear prices
And everyone is wondering how US tariffs will impact on the price of Chinese-made musical/audio equipment.

Re: Soaring prices? WIN top gear/software with SOS Competitions
There ought to be some sort of overall UK command structure to sort this kinda stuff out.. Isn't it called a local Council election? ie. May 1st - when people of Birmingham and Edinburgh can tell those in power just what they feel about rats the size of cats tearing apart bin bags! How is that ever ...

Re: GAK have closed their shop
So, for 2023, their turnover was £21m, 'operating profit' was around £14k and at the year end they had assets of around £5.2m and liabilities of £3.2m. To my untrained eye that looks reasonably heathy? That’s a 0.06% return, even the lowest savings rates are better than that. The liabilities are les ...

Re: MAGIX is insolvent
I came across this thread by chance today while looking for something else. My name is Ricardo Röpke, and I'm the Product Owner for Samplitude, Sequoia, Sound Forge, and our plugin product lines at MAGIX. Best Hi Richard, Thanks for updating your SOS Forum signature to make it 100% clear that you ...

Re: MAGIX is insolvent
Sadly, too many companies put their marketing budget into YouTube influencers and social media ads, turning their back sillily on around 1 million monthly unique users of soundonsound.com who are their core audience.

Re: I discovered Cherry Audio soft synths
....I would look at a synth and say to myself does it have enough Oscillators/Envelope Generators/LFOs and does it have the modulation routings for the sorts of sounds I want to create? When I do the same with plug-in synths I almost always find that Vintage Synth in Logic does nearly everything ...

Re: I discovered Cherry Audio soft synths
I bought Cherry's Pro Soloist soft synth after reading Gordon Reid's glowing review of it in SOS. Only managed to use it a couple of times before I packed away all my studio kit (moved house) but it gave me what I wanted, namely the ability to sound like Tony Banks for attempting to play his classic ...

Re: Question from a subscriber re issues since Canada Post strike
Yes, of course I do check the digital version occasionally to read one or two articles, but in general much prefer reading on paper rather than online. I do not have (nor want) a smart phone and often read on long train commutes, etc. Hence my paper subscription! Fair enough Lawrence (I love the ...

Re: Question from a subscriber re issues since Canada Post strike
Lawrence - you have a Print+Digital sub so why not use the Digital parts to read the locked web articles, or access the full issue PDF download in your My Account... or visit the Replica page-turning version that looks just like the magazine? These will all help satiate your thirst for SOS. ;-) This ...

Re: Question from a subscriber re issues since Canada Post strike
Hi Lawrence We have been told that Canada Post will be working through all the massive backlogs of post they held up while on strike, but obviously we have no insight into how fast that will occur or how efficient they will be. The February 2025 issue North America copies will be mailed out early ...

Re: Clean My Mac worth it with latest MacOS?
I have been a Clean My Mac X user for ages now and don't see any harm in using it. I know some Mac experts (like Gary Rosenzweig of Macmost.com ) tell us we do not need any 3rd party app for such tools, but it brings added comfort to me. I use it mainly to clean up leftover detritus when I uninstall ...

Re: I figured out how to show the full internet address in the top of the window
wow, I thought this forum was about Mac music, not how to use a Mac for dummies  A bit harsh, Dave. Everyone is at a different stage in their learning curve, so generosity of spirit has always been SOS's way. You can't make music, after all, on a Mac without knowing first how to use it. ;-)

Re: A modern MIDI patchbay?
SY35 and QS300 both have active sensing (it shows up as a faint background flicker in the MIDI->USB interface) and so did the SY22 I used to have. From memory I recall ALL Yamaha MIDI keyboards and modules employing Active Sensing. Possibly most of the Sequential devices too... not sure about ...
