Re: Recording wind band with a wall right behind the conductor

I’ve been in a similar position in the Brighouse & Rastrick band room…about a foot behind the MD’s head and up…I was trialling NOS-like CM3s at the time. Worked OK.

Re: String quartet - 3 condensers, some 57s\58s

The sengpiel calculators are very good, but I mostly use the Neumann Recording Tool app on my phone to visualise mic arrays tweaks as it's interactive and quicker to use (and easier to do when on location). Totally agree…but I’m, er, cough on a coffee break in the office and had that bookmarked 🤣

Re: String quartet - 3 condensers, some 57s\58s

Good that it went well but what's ortf ____ at 90*? You and me both, eh? :D For the benefit of others, the French ORTF mic array has a very precise specification: 170mm capsule spacing with a 110 degree mutual angle. If the stereo mic array doesn't have that exact spacing and that exact ...

Re: Jack Ruston's nutrition article

We don't have a clear definition of nutrients so I don't think it's useful to argue it in that way. Well…I for one don’t want to survive purely on proteins and amino acids ;) That review is talking explicitly about them. I’m not here to argue with you…but by referencing one review that is - by their ...

Re: Duplication vs Replication

Pretty much what Hugh said. The only other sometime advantage of duplication is turnaround time....it's usually in the order of a few days delivered (with a similar paper part and onbody spec) vs some weeks for replication (and that has got worse in the UK since Brexit....either longer deliver times ...

There are no hard and fast rules...if someone is in the lucky situation where they have a choice, then that’s exactly what you make...sometimes it’s for practical reasons, sometimes artistic, sometimes you’re asked for something particular by a client or producer... The bottom line is that the less e ...

Re: SDC recommendations

This is a clip of a test recording I did during a rehearsal using the CM3s in an NOS-like configuration (sorry Hugh!) to see how they’d cope on their own in a poor room where I normally multimic..apologies for the relatively tasteless reverb...I’ve recommended them to bands who have been looking for ...

Re: SDC recommendations

I think the Line Audio CM4s are a little more rounded and smoother, and they get a lot of love, although I haven't tried any myself. I don't know how consistent their matching is -- can anyone comment? Like James, I've got CM3s not CM4s and I've not actually done any formal measuring nor used them ...

I doubt it's possible from a limited bandwidth recording to "synthesise" the actual missing overtones of that voice. It is possible, with Izotope Spectral Repair. It’s a case of making the best fist of it that you can with what you’ve been given, really. Other than that, you can run things through declipping plugins and other associated rescue te ...
