Re: Building a music production PC that will last 10 years
I think it’s unlikely that raw processing power will be the most important determining factor these days - for the first time, reasonable spec machines can generally meet most people’s needs for making music. Thinking back to my first music computers in the 90s, that’s quite a revolutionary achie ...

Re: PRS payments/UK Tax question when living abroad
I’m not a tax expert, but I believe you must declare your worldwide income on your Australian tax return. As an Australian resident for tax purposes, you must declare income you earn anywhere in the world in your Australian tax return. This is known as your worldwide income. It includes any foreign i ...

Re: Could I get a Sade-type sound with a PC + Ableton? Or would Mac + Logic Pro be way better?
I think your best bet is to look at other options. I don’t think Ableton is best suited to this, and you don’t need to buy a new machine to find a good solution. I would look at other PC based DAWs such as Reaper, Studio One or Cubase. Or others… None of them will give you a Sade sound out of the box ...

Re: Considering moving from PC to Mac. Low latency performance?
I, too, have had a recent hankerin’ for some fruit-based gadgetry and have taken advice from the hive. I’m not really for any performance improvement, although most modern machines would out-count my old Lenovo lappy. Instead, I’m obliged by work stuff to engage with the Apple environment so I reall ...

Re: Considering moving from PC to Mac. Low latency performance?
Instead of incessantly reconfiguring and upgrading my PC, I just “used” the Mac. I don't get it! What's with all this "incessant reconfiguring and upgrading" nonsense? I haven't needed or wanted to reconfigure anything on my PC, and the only 'upgrading' has been Windows standard security updates. It ...

Re: Considering moving from PC to Mac. Low latency performance?
I can't answer your question about latencies, and to some extent it will depend on your hardware, but in terms of adjusting config - I've never had to change anything, and in terms of noise, the only time I've ever heard anything is when testing the machine's performance, or occasionally doing ...

Re: AI Music Is Exploding on YT (Probably on the other Streamers)
Don’t get stressed out about any of this AI music, it's not worth it. I spent the whole afternoon today editing my next album, AI will have a tough job getting a handle on it, it's influences, and the effects of certain types of medication used during it's conception, and the 70 years of life that i ...

Re: I thought that the loudness war was over
I don't like the 'brick sound' either, but I can respect that it is expected in some genres and fashions. It's art, innit. But intersample peak clipping is just plain incompetent... I agree. I wonder if people who do that do it knowingly? It does add a tiny fraction of loudness and I wonder if that ...

Re: I thought that the loudness war was over
Pop music is driven by fashion. The highly-limited brick sound has become a thing and I guess people like it. Personally, I think it ruins everything it touches.

Re: AI Music Is Exploding on YT (Probably on the other Streamers)
AI music is especially effective in instrumental, ambient, electronic, and even some world music genres—areas where repetition, atmosphere, and vibe are key. The bar for "believability" is lower than in genres that rely on lyrical authenticity or vocal nuance (like indie rock, folk, or jazz vocals). ...

Re: What is 'Original'?
I think there are two meanings of original, as in ‘a new piece’ and ‘containing unusual ideas’.
These overlap but they are not the same.
In the second case, the piece does not necessarily have to be new.

Re: How to anonymously release music in the UK
You could set up an LLC and then open a business account for payments but assuming you'll be appointing yourself director, your name will still show up on the companies house register. I think PPL membership costs a lot more as a company also but it's been a while. Setting up a company in the UK ...

Re: AI Search Engine's responses are often confidently wrong
As a counter to the (genuine) untrustworthiness of LLMs, there’s a specialised maths model that’s as good as the best graduate students, but takes 10 minutes to solve a problem that would take them months or years. I’ve highlighted an amazing sentence in the quote. I came up with a problem which expe ...

When I ran up against the wall, I got an accounting degree. Had a surprisingly great career in that field for about 20 years. Made a ton of money. Now I own a staggering amount of toys which I refer to as my retirement fund. Still play music too. This is a great way to do things. Music becomes fun.
