Re: Phantom Power Over CAT-6? SM7B > the sssnake Cat Snake 3MB > Cloud Lifter > A & H QU16

The sssnake Cat Snake 3FC isn't proper cat 6, it just uses the shielded 4 x twisted pairs in a cat 6 cable to pass the analogue signals between ssnake units and as long as you use grounded foil shielded cat 6 cable it should work OK with phantom power.

Re: What is the AM music "sound", besides mono?

after all my early teens listening to Radio 1 (247M of course) on an old valve Marconiphone 'wireless' and then on a tiny transistor radio, my records on my parents (Bush probably) auto changer record player with it's single 7" elliptical speaker, the pinnacle of audio quality for me was the sy...

Re: What is the AM music "sound", besides mono?

The biggest difference is obviously the bandwidth.

AM stations have a maximum bandwidth of around 5KHz.

Re: Getting the best audio for live streams

We use a Black Magic Designs ATEM mini in our church live stream setup. I bring the 2 cameras on hdmi and output from the A&H SQ5 on a stereo jack. (And a laptop on one of the other HDMI inputs for dropping in pre-recorded stuff, with the audio straight out of the hdmi) I can then do a test stre...

Remind me again... Why are virtual synths so £**&ing loud?

I started putting together a new MainStage concert for a gig coming up that's got a load of new songs for us. And once again was reminded quite how loud many synth plugins are. Often defaulting to a fully normalised 0dB if you play a full velocity note, so, first thing I have to do is back them off ...

Re: My latest lovely journey with external PSUs

Which is why there should be international pressure to standardise. Even Apple caved to the EU to put a USB C on the iPhone. With the cheap access to buck/boost circuits with wide input/output voltages and USB-C PD being spec’d right up to 240W, there is really no reason you couldn’t power anything ...

Cover bands. Choosing your sound?

I’d like your take on this. I do keys in a cover band, and I’m always caught between the effort to select/programme a sound that is reasonably close to the recording, or ‘no, this is our version, and I’ll choose a sound that reflects my preference.’ This is distinct from a tribute band that I think ...

Re: External USB floppy drive recommendations

I remember buying an upgrade kit from Evesham Micros to turn my 520 into a 1040, soldering in a daughter board, I think, with the extra memory on it.

I remember looking longingly at the 200MB drive in the cabinet, when I bought the upgrade kit, but it was a distant dream!

Re: SubZero transformer DI boxes

I don't disagree, and if I needed a DI for use in the studio, to DI a bass for a recording, then I would go and acquire a good-un. But in the context of offering up a balanced signal to a FOH in an average pub (Or just plumbing it in to our own PA with it's aging Mackie mains), I stand by that Lambd...

Indeed the DI120 is possibly the worst bit of audio gear ever made! (The Ultra DI100 is actually much better and actually usable. OK if you like Volca-ing otherwise very limited. Korg OPSIX might be a better bet for DX-FM & then some. Better still a MODX module :) but such a thing dont exist :( The op six, while it looks sweet, is a bit rich for me at the moment (could get 5 volcas for that money, and I’ve just had to han...

Re: Interesting desktop/rack synth suggestions

Has anyone tried the Korg Volca FM2?

It seems to be essentially a DX7 in a dinky box for under £140, the blurb reckons it can read DX7 sysex files too.

That might be quite interesting.

Interesting desktop/rack synth suggestions

Now I've got my new keyboard stand organised, I have discovered there's room for a rack or desktop module on the top tier (By way of a suitable shelf) next to the Moog Sub37. But I’m amazed that TC electronics produce a gig centric FX pedal that can’t just deal with phantom power.

OK, I'm thinking it might be Rosetta, or something to do with that.

I switched Logic to boot natively and not using Rosetta and boom! straight in.

Re: Logic Pro 11 Announced

Anyone else finding Logic 11 takes ages to boot up?

(I'm on a 13" M1 MBP running 14.5)

I had the Icon in the dock bounce for a while and then stop, OSX thinks it's running, (Because if you open the force quit dialog it shows up) and then all of a sudden minutes later, the UI appears.

Weird.

Re: Best (Affordable) Method To Capture a Speaker's Frequency Response?

There aren’t many room reflections in a field. You could perhaps drive out to a big empty space and run the speaker off a battery powered amp. Most DAWs have a test tone plugin, or there is a free one from blue cat audio. A beheringer ECM 8000 measurement mic isn’t lab standard, but it’s £30. Set yo...
