Re: Play your favourite VSTis live without* a computer?
Neat idea for some very specific sounds I would like to have to hand, like Mellotron and Solina strings ... will be interesting to see where it ends up!

Thanks! Yes, it's starting to come together, after ... (checks thread) 3 months!

Re: New project -- Berlin Chiptune -- journal and audio samples
Quick update: I happened to have a recording that had an isolated bit of my 808 hihat module and was able to sample that into the NerdSeq as well -- so we're on like Donkey Kong now!

Re: New project -- Berlin Chiptune -- journal and audio samples
A very interesting day of experimentation yesterday! The following is a long-winded rant/diatribe which can be totally ignored. TL;DR - I will likely have to sample my 808 modules if I want to keep things simple. Running the bass line with a single Morpheus in Monophonic mode fixes a lot of issues I ...

Re: New project -- Berlin Chiptune -- journal and audio samples
Next configuration is ready for testing. Today's test will be: NERDSEQ TR1 - MORPHEUS 1, MONOPHONIC MODE; BASSLINE TR2 - MORPHEUS 2, GM MODE; MIDI CHANNEL 2 TR3 - MORPHEUS 2, GM MODE; MIDI CHANNEL 3 TR4 - MORPHEUS 2, GM MODE; MIDI CHANNEL 4 TR5 - MORPHEUS 2, GM MODE; MIDI CHANNEL 5 TR6 - TX7 ...

Re: New project -- Berlin Chiptune -- journal and audio samples
The experimentation continues! I'm not sure I'm sold on the DR-550, and it doesn't really have as much to do with the drum machine as much as how patterns work on the MC-50: each pattern is 1 measure long and you build a "rhythm track" by chaining patterns. It gets more complicated by the fact that ...

Re: New project -- Berlin Chiptune -- journal and audio samples
The intro, which runs about a minute long, is now blocked out. I’ve not done any super-intentional ‘composed’ writing in a long time! It’s a bit tedious, especially spread across three different sequencers, but the results are very cool. And this is still preferable to me over enlisting a computer/iP ...

Re: New project -- Berlin Chiptune -- journal and audio samples
Happy to report that the setup works PERFECTLY! Working within the constraints of the General MIDI presets is an interesting challenge. I am writing the intro to the next chiptune and so far it's sounding really good. MIDISID in polyphonic mode is MONSTROUS -- just a HUGE sound, even in mono. The ...

Re: New project -- Berlin Chiptune -- journal and audio samples
When you can't go out, go up!

This is as compact as I can get the setup unless I decide to forego the Listen Fours and get the eurorack down to 60hp. I'm not going to commit to anything until I am sure that the DR-550 will end up being my final drum solution.

Re: New project -- Berlin Chiptune -- journal and audio samples
On the docket for this weekend:
- Test the MC-50 with the DR-550 to see if that's a better option than using modular drums
- Start work on the new chiptune arrangement

You should check out the Sonicware Liven line of synths; not sure if they have onboard sequencer, tho.

Re: New project -- Berlin Chiptune -- journal and audio samples
Had a couple of SUPER busy days of work, so not a ton of progress on this project, but I did have a couple of minor victories: - I have a good chunk of the intro complete on what I hope will be the first 'keeper' chiptune. I've not committed anything down beyond what I've arranged in my head, but I ...

Re: New project -- Berlin Chiptune -- journal and audio samples
After a couple of days casting about, learning a bit about MIDISID, and coming to grips with the available sound palette, I dove headfirst into trying to make it work using the GM sounds. With the current firmware my options are either: several voices using GM, or a single mono/duo/poly-phonic patch ...

Re: A very full-featured SID chip synth that's also at a great price? MIDISID Morpheus!
My first two days with the MIDISID were an emotional roller coaster. :D The biggest challenge right now is the fact that, as the current firmware stands, you can only have one mode of operation active during a singular session. FOR EXAMPLE: If you have a great sound set up in monophonic mode and ...

Re: A very full-featured SID chip synth that's also at a great price? MIDISID Morpheus!
As my only other experience with General MIDI sounds is the JV-1080 ... this is nothing like it! :D Of course, you cannot compare sampling/ROMpler against pure waveform synthesis! I have found the GM list to be helpful to locate specific types of sounds, tho -- say, a pluck vs a PWM sound vs ...

Re: A very full-featured SID chip synth that's also at a great price? MIDISID Morpheus!
MIDISID update : after about 7 hours of on-and-off RTFM'ing, looking stuff up online (like how Program Change messages work, the GM Instrument list, etc), converting the SID's instrument list to hex to work with NerdSeq, and messing with all 4 modes (General MIDI, Polyphonic, Duophonic, Monophonic ...

Re: New project -- Berlin Chiptune -- journal and audio samples
It’s been amusing (and expensive) to see this project, which started as ‘what would chiptune influenced Berlin School sound like’ evolve into both a straight Berlin School album, and is now leaning towards straight chiptune. :D It feels like a video game quest! Once I have acquired the two keys I can ...

Re: New project -- Berlin Chiptune -- journal and audio samples
Apparently there's a know gate on/off bug with the original SIDs where it has trouble differentiating notes when they are in rapid succession, which has been lovingly recreated in the current emulations. I have found that inserting the KILL command one step before the next note plays creates a ...

Re: New project -- Berlin Chiptune -- journal and audio samples
No doubt this makes perfect sense when you've got the unit in front of you, but it was head-scrambling for me at the theoretical level  100% agree!
