Re: Aerophone Brisa (flute controller)
I do agree, but going through the Hanon book or running 2 octave scales in every key is a discipline I lack. For the method I studied (Sandoli Method), the progression was Wolfhart, Dont, Bach (2 Part Inventions), Kreutzer, then Paganini (24 Caprices). You're totally correct, it requires a ton of ...

Testing is going well! May have a quick and dirty video as well if the sound came out okay.

Re: New project -- Berlin Chiptune -- journal and audio samples
I've been picking away on the setup between work calls and I must say -- this latest workflow is a dream to write on! The JV-1080 track definitely elevates the overall sound. I currently have the JV-1080 on MIDI channel 8 where it doesn't overlap with the MIDISIDs in any capacity. Bass is is on MIDI ...

Re: New project -- Berlin Chiptune -- journal and audio samples
TOTALLY agree! The sampling on the NerdSeq is perfectly fine for what I'm doing. I was pretty shocked when I heard the extent that newer chiptune artists are incorporating samples, some tunes barely have any recognizable 'chip' in the tune! :D IF I were to find an og SID chip at a decent price, I ...

Re: New project -- Berlin Chiptune -- journal and audio samples
What a difference 19 cents makes! It's a whole new ballgame with the tuning adjusted. I wish I had time to do a deep dive into the MIDISIDs tonight, but too many other obligations. :( There's always the weekend at least. So pleased that you and Shiela solved the tuning problems, and I wish you luck ...

Re: New project -- Berlin Chiptune -- journal and audio samples
With tuning now under control, this provides me with my original dilemma in that NerdSeq can "only" support 6 tracks of MIDI sequencing. After some playing around, I learned that I can select sounds on the JV-1080 quite easily using Program Change commands from NerdSeq, but the highest Program ...

Firmware updated and everything works! Also worth noting that MIDISID has the easiest fw procedure I've encountered yet. Got both units updated in less than 2 minutes.

UPDATE:
Shiela is on the case! Not only did she confirm the issue, she did exhaustive testing, updated the firmware, and documented it all in a video.

Re: New project -- Berlin Chiptune -- journal and audio samples
Glad to hear that things are moving forward again in a positive fashion Ben. LOL yes, a moment of despair followed by a rush of activity. :D The new sound palette reminds me very much of a (slightly) higher res version of my favorite Final Fantasy scores, so this may end up being the final form of ...

Re: New project -- Berlin Chiptune -- journal and audio samples
Well, okay ... I may have actually stumbled onto something here! I set up a dead simple palette: MIDISID on a bass synth patch -- properly tuned now :D -- 808 kick drum, and the classic Warm Strings patch on the JV-1080. I didn't get very far, just goofing around with some different patterns, but it ...

Re: New project -- Berlin Chiptune -- journal and audio samples
Woo - serious anomaly for tunesmiths! I'm pleased that Shiela has already got back to you, but the SID note frequencies are determined by two lookup tables, each of 96 bytes. These contain the low and high bytes for a 16-bit value for each of eight octaves worth of notes. In this table, A4 (440Hz ...

Re: New project -- Berlin Chiptune -- journal and audio samples
I heard back from Shiela today! She suspects that the tuning difference is from switching from SwiSID to KungFuSID, but will run some tests to confirm. In the meanwhile, I'm trying out Plan E - NerdSeq, 2x MIDISID, and JV-1080.

Re: New project -- Berlin Chiptune -- journal and audio samples
Well, today I am at a crossroads. Not being able to adjust the tuning in General MIDI mode is a massive blow and something I didn’t even think to consider in my plans. Should I continue forward using the MIDISIDs in monophonic mode, I can’t help thinking that I am taking a step backwards into more co ...

Re: A very full-featured SID chip synth that's also at a great price? MIDISID Morpheus!
This is a PSA in case any future people are looking to get this synth and it hasn't been resolved in firmware by that point in time: both of my MIDISIDs are anywhere from 20-32 cents flat depending on the preset. If you're using any of the non GM modes, you can adjust the tuning, save the patch to ...

Re: New project -- Berlin Chiptune -- journal and audio samples
Well, it looks like there is a tuning adjustment -- but it only works if you are using monophonic or polyphonic mode, not General MIDI, which means I will lose 4 voices. It may be better than nothing, tho.

Re: New project -- Berlin Chiptune -- journal and audio samples
Correction, the MIDISIDs are FIFTY cents flat, both of them. And there's no master tuning control that I can see. I'm gutted after all of that effort and expense to have something so stupid stop me in my tracks. I reached out the Shiela, but I seriously doubt there's a fix for this unless she adds ...

Re: New project -- Berlin Chiptune -- journal and audio samples
With the basic structure sorted out, I pulled out one of my guitars to play along with the MIDISIDs and I found out that they both run about 25 cents flat. :headbang: I downtuned my guitar to match, but am now looking to see if I can change their pitch in the NerdSeq (I think there's a pitch effect ...

Re: New project -- Berlin Chiptune -- journal and audio samples
With THAT out of the way, I can now talk a bit about the new chiptune arrangement! This is all heavy music theory stuff, feel free to skip this one as I’m just thinking aloud. :) I have a few sections worked out currently but the arrangement is still quite skeletal: guitar, bass, drums, lead synth. ...

Re: New project -- Berlin Chiptune -- journal and audio samples
I don’t know how I missed detailing my songwriting approach for phase 2 of the chiptune project — probably because it’s not anything earth-shattering. :D Basically, I reversed the primary writing instrument from the tracker to guitar. I’m hoping this leads to a more organic balance between the synths ...
