I'm trying to work out how a boom arm could be 'counterintuitive'?

Sometimes a bit of cheap gear is fine for a simple job. Other times it can be made so with a cheap bodge. Sometimes it's best to just pay the money.

How do you manage when singing with live musicians, maybe without amplification at all? Do they have to play ridiculously loud for you to be able to hear them?

If you are after clean recordings from mainstream mics, just about all preamps are "decent pre's".
