Re: Lavalier microphone that can eliminate background noise?
It’s all down to signal to noise ratio; the closer the microphone is to your mouth (signal) the quieter the background (noise) will be. So I would suggest a headphone and microphone set, that will get the microphone close to your mouth without creating plosives and look professional at the same t ...

Re: Recording Upright Piano: Mic recommendations
I'm getting a ton of hiss... ...I really love the sound of an upright, very particularly when the felt is lowered. It gives this soft, dark sound that gets me. And I want to capture a very dark tone in the recordings. The lowered felt can knock out a lot of the brightness in the piano. That sound ...

Re: Restoring the sound from an old musical?
This audio could end up being challenging, at least to recover all of the spoken and sung material at least the more quietly spoken on the recording. The audio transfer may not have been optimal. Do you still have the original camera videocassette?

Re: Regulated vs unregulated 9V DC power supply
"Dont assume" is a wise course here. Owners' Manual have for decades warned to use only the Plug Pack originally supplied with the unit. The old saying, RTFM (read the @#$%* manual) really is a wise one. Of course, RTFM is first port of call (and something I like doing for fun much to my wife's ...

Re: Need help with really strange noise on vocal recording.
It's an unusual sound, like an unrelated rasping noise, especially as Sam mentions on the "possess" word. More like something anatomical in the throat, perhaps related to the vocal cords. The sound reminds me of an Afro-American comedy actor from maybe the 50's who had unusual vocal cords which ...

Re: Tape style clipping in a plugin
Hey all On consideration I think I was probably incorrect about the Beatles reference, as yeah actually their recordings are actually very clean, I think I maybe just used that as a reference point that in my mind was more saturated than I thought. Yes and this error can come about by not actually ...

Re: Tape style clipping in a plugin
I would tend to verge on under rather over doing unless you are absolutely certain about what you want to achieve and what your monitoring is telling you. I would 100% agree with this - real tape colouration is surprisingly subtle - far more subtle than those who have never used real tape would ...

Re: Tape style clipping in a plugin
It is good you are cautious cause it can sound horrendous, like you don't know what you are doing. Beatles vocals were pretty undistorted actually, as were most pro recordings I’ve often wondered how ‘Go Now’, a 60s track, managed to be so distorted on the lead vocal, it always makes me wince when I ...

Re: Tape style clipping in a plugin
The book "Recording The Beatles" gives a pretty good account of the equipment and techniques used, I believe. Always good to go to the best original sources. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recording_the_Beatles Overall apart from eg: electric guitar distortion effects, Beatles vocals were pretty ...

Re: 2025 Click + Pop removal question
... The clicks were exactly 1 sample long so all I did was to zoom in to sample level and bridge the gap either side of the click. It did take a fair amount of time as I had about 2 1/2 hours of audio to clean up but IMO it was ultimately the least destructive to the rest of the audio. 1 sample ...

Re: 2025 Click + Pop removal question
De-clicking is RX's weak point in my opinion. You may have more success with De-Crackle but I'd probably go for Adobe Audition first. If you send me a PM with a link to the file, I can try running it through Audition for you. James you've been saying this about RX for a long time now. Why not ...

Re: 2025 Click + Pop removal question
ManFromGlass wrote: ↑Tue Mar 11, 2025 12:31 pm This may not be the technical explanation but I always thought a click was mostly a high frequency short duration event while a pop has mids and possibly lows in it. An audio event caused by a scratch or large piece of dust might be more of a pop event.
That sounds about right to me.

Re: 2025 Click + Pop removal question
I use RX plug in version and it is very successful and deal with plenty of them. Snip snip, select, right click, select RX "De-plosive" (edited for exact name) plug in, process, gone usually without much fuss or parameter tweaks. Set the HPF something like 80Hz-110Hz, usually works ok. According to ...

Re: 2025 Click + Pop removal question
Hi Safe and Sound, Maybe there are great Depop, Deplop, DeThump tools out there. I know Cedar Cambridge has a Dethump tool. But AFAIK compared to short duration clicks as found on analog disc media such as vinyl and shellac, these tools generally have a much tougher assignment. For unlike these ...

Re: 2025 Click + Pop removal question
The master tapes have disappeared many moons ago so I had to digitize my bands LP from 1978 last night. I had 3 unopened ones left. Assuming the disc process was good, having 3 unopened vinyl pressings is a boon. Obviously not as good as a clean master tape but not bad. The other analog aspect is ...

Re: Editing and Digital Clicks
I remember the first time when I noticed my old Wavelab 4 would not always allow me to edit at a certain precise point. From memory it seemed to move the waveforms slightly until it found matching amplitudes, which became the new splice point. Would this have been so or was something else going on?

Re: Storing Vintage 4 track Cassette Portastudio Masters

Yes good advice, and it's best for that exposed tape section to be expertly cleaned before playing especially if the cassette ...

Both links take me to the same processed file. The main issue that I heard on that file was quite a bit of room reverb. Thanks for listening, and your advice earlier. Re: Help with acoustic guitar recording
Agree with Hugh's advice to make a good capture. It makes life so much easier down the road. Corrective EQ, especially when it's multi band is sometimes necessary but often to pull it off we need to know our stuff, and even then it may be no walk in the park.
