'Down' - With Real Drums!

Hm, okay. I wasn't trying to be cryptic, it's just the way this brain works (or doesn't). How about 'Down' - With Real Drums!

Re: The Second One This Year?

Thanks, all - your collective response is encouraging. I'm thinking that an element of that response is due to the presence of drums on this one. Not just hand percussion like I've done before, but a real, live drumkit played by a real, live person. Drums are powerful. What do you think?

Re: The Second One This Year?

Enjoyed that! I love those multi inset videos you guys do, they work really well. For me, all that stuff's harder than the music, so well done! I probably shouldn't say this, but the video bits are *so* low-input compared to the audio. I spend a *lot* of time on the audio - writing, rehearsing ...

Re: The Second One This Year?

I agree as well. 2 dB, I think. But having foolishly sent it for mastering, I'm too cheap to do that a second time. 🤣

Really, really good work. I enjoyed that a lot. Sort of leaves the gentle, folkie fingerpicking acoustic player behind a bit, yes?

Re: Rick Beato v Universal Music Group

Thomas, Sam - thanks. Googlai says this about paying fees for YT stuff: 'Paying for copyrighted music on YouTube isn't a single, simple process; it often involves contacting copyright holders for a sync license, which can be expensive and time-consuming. However, it can be made easier by using ...

Re: Rick Beato v Universal Music Group

Fair use is all well and good if you are an academic with a reach measured in thousands at the vey most, but Rick Beato has over 5 million subscribers to his channel. It think that goes beyond fair use, and into the realms of exploitation if he's not paying for the use of the music. Okay, you think ...

Re: Rick Beato v Universal Music Group

Surprisingly Adam Smith wrote The Wealth Of Nations before the Industrial Revolution. Smith was a classical economist where goods have an intrinsic value. The Industrial Revolution produced a new kind of economics -- marginal economics -- where the value of goods is set by the market. Pretty likely ...

Re: Rick Beato v Universal Music Group

I'm not a lawyer, but this lady is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0p0hYoWwWI I've seen her before. She says it's fair use, and describes UMG as 'silly' and increasingly aggressive. (She also reckons it's internal to UMG, not third party.) Here's GoogleAI on making a buck from fair use: 'No ...

Re: Rick Beato v Universal Music Group

Is there a mechanism in place whereby he could play for the snippets he uses in his (money-making) videos? Why are they threatening to close his channel instead of asking him to pay for his use of the music? Why does he hire a lawyer to fight the attacks instead of paying for use of the music he ...

Album - EP - Single

When I started this recording (ahem) journey, I made albums. Then a few years ago I decided that I was up to making EPs, but albums were just too much work. Nowadays it's singles. It's like I started out writing novels, and now I do the occasional sonnet. But this is not a dwindling in anything but ...

New and better instruments are fine. Not necessary in order to make good music though. Neophiliacs will disagree.

4-out monitor controller?

I use a Mackie Big Knob monitor controller right now, but I want more outputs now than it offers. I've got two outputs now, but I want four. I only need routing capability, nothing much else. I'd love to be able to listen through earbuds, but it seems that's not doable with just a monitor controller ...

Re: Near-final mix when recording vocals?

In the old days - and even the current day - did vocalists record their take on a near-finished mix of the instrument tracks? Well, ignoring the EQ part of the question, I generally don't, but I see no reason why I wouldn't benefit from recording the vocal to the best assembled mix. I can see ...

How do you get that much hiss on a recording? If it had been mixed, the hiss would have been removed.

The Hissing of Summer Lawns was Way Better Than This

What's wrong with this mix? Or is it a matter of copies of a mix?

I don't mean the content - I'm okay with the content, as far as it goes - I'm talking about the hiss. Where does it come from? The original recording? Surely not the mix.
