Re: Kurzweil V.A.S.T. but unloved
The results are clear. The Kurzweil recreation sounds VASTly inferior to the original and if your ears cannot discern that even from the clips presented then there is absolutely no point in continuing this discussion. You should tell that to the members of PF. After all, they replaced their own ...

Re: Kurzweil V.A.S.T. but unloved
If you want a perfect demonstration as to what VAST really "lacks", listen to the live version of Pink Floyd's "On the Run" and compare it to the original recording, or even a recreation on other more advanced synths. The Kurzweil version is bland and lifeless in comparison. That's really funny ...

Re: Kurzweil V.A.S.T. but unloved
If you have any links to particularly fantastic VAST sounds that can prove me wrong, please do share. What's 'modern synthesis' to you? You can build all forms of synthesis in V.A.S.T., so the only issue is if you don't know how to do it in V.A.S.T., then start blaming it on V.A.S.T.. What is it ...

Re: Kurzweil V.A.S.T. but unloved
It is the most powerful synthesizer platform, so if you're not happy with the factory sounds, well, you can program your own. If you haven't been able to program your own analogue-sounding patches, it is no fault of the Workstation as it is entirely capable of that, especially an older K2000. I ...

Re: DaVinchi Resolve v others
Davinci doesn't have a H in it.
It's a great piece of software but bear in mind bog standard PCs might not have the GPU grunt to run it. All Apple silicon Macs, right from the cheapest, will work perfectly with it.

Re: Advice please - new MacBook pro, M4 or M4pro chip
I was all set to purchase a new MacBook pro to replace my ailing 14 year old workhorse MacBook pro and then doubt took hold. I was happy to go for the 14" base model M4 with Ram increased to 24gig. With Logic pre-installed this came in at about £2k. Then I see the M4pro model, which comes with ...

Re: AKG Perception - U87 Mod
Pretty interesting read! Anyone around here try this one or have any thoughts about it? From the article: "I would be proud to give to any vocalist. Is it a Neumann? I don’t think so, and also I don’t have one for testing because I don’t have $3,595" Translation: "I have no idea what I'm talking abo ...

mountain lion wrote: ↑Wed Nov 06, 2024 6:16 pm Surely the base m4 processor must be a lot better than my quadcore 2015.
Yes, it'll absolutely demolish it. Unless you're doing extreme sample rates or absolutely gigantic sounds banks it will be plenty fast enough.

Re: M4 Mac Mini
Some impressive specs, and yes, the base model prices are surprisingly un-Apple-like. Agreed Luke - very attractive. Anyone know if the internal power supply is an auto-switching one so it can be used in different countries? Almost all power supplies have been dual switching for decades. The Mac ...

Re: PCI cards
Surely thunderbolt / usb-c to multiple usb-a hub makes more sense. Loads of them available. Audio interfaces tend not to like hubs. Depends on the hub. If you have a thunderbolt sound card you need a thunderbolt hub. I have one from OWC and it works perfectly with the sound card, SSD and further ...

Still utterly depressing that Behringer devotes so many resources into old designs. Nostalgia is an awful thing.

It looks like they've slightly hobbled the CPU performance in the Pro versions of the M2/3 chips compared to the M1Pro.

Re: AI generated album art
Please don’t do it. AI art is an already cringeworthy fad and looks terrible. The same people pushing this were pushing monkey NFTs a couple of years ago. Look up how that turned out. Re: Should My Next Machine be a Mac?
I can honestly say that dealing with stuttering, performance issues and freezing tracks takes up about 50% of my production time. You certainly need a Mac. Specifically an Apple Silicon Mac. Minimum spec: MacBook Air M1 (never consider an Intel chip). Go for 16GB or more if you can. M1 Pro will be ...

Re: To upgrade or not?
At some point you'll want to upgrade to Apple Silicon, it runs beautifully. I don't personally like Logic but some people love it, try a demo if you can. Garage band is a cut down version so that would get you used to the workflow. If you don't have the budget for a new setup and you're doing fine ...

Re: When not to oversample?
Some plugins (and metering) do the up-down sampling automatically, but many don't. This is what I find to be the difficult part. Some plugins don't, some do (and may mention it somewhere), others hide it in a settings menu and some display it proudly on the main GUI! Generally oversampling adds ...

Re: All Moog
I found my Voyager a funny instrument, it sort of sounded fine, but there was something I couldn’t put my finger on, plus the knobs didn’t memorise their position, analogue style, I thought that would be fine, but it’s what made me sell it in the end, the sound wasn’t enough to make me keep it.
