Re: Order of Operations
Peter, you’re probably aware, but you need to make sure your wav file is peaking significantly below 0dB to avoid distortion in the mp3 conversion. Many people quote -1dB, but others -1.5dB or even lower. I think it depends on the material and on the quality of the mp3. I’m no expert here, others wi ...

Re: CC8 - short bursts of signal after turning phantom power off
Yes, I've noticed this burst at on/off. I'm a little confused (as ever) because I have a Mixpre 3 (original version - no software updates). With this machine I have the gain set permanently at whatever - does this mean I should not only turn the controls right down on each channel (hard left) but ...

Re: String quartet experts - what is going on here?
Off the top of my head, I've used between one and twenty-six channels (normally I'm in the two to six channel range). This sounds crazy to me! How would you need more than four channels to record a string quartet!!! This is possibly why musicians have so little faith in the people that record them ...

Re: String quartet experts - what is going on here?
Hi Hugh - from your amplitude response plot it looks to me that the black line was mostly at O degrees - which may have been the more ideal recording?

Re: String quartet experts - what is going on here?
all I can say is that it sounds like it was recorded in a small front-room, it’s totally dead, and the top end, don’t know about silk, it sounds more like sand paper. I thought the first violin sounded quite good and the top end was OK. It was from the viola and cello sound that for me were pro ...

Re: String quartet experts - what is going on here?
If I've got this right - the order of importance is:- Music Performers Room/hall acoustics mic placement mics preamps (May have missed something ...) I would also go for transparent as Bob said, and not the congested and unbalanced sound they managed to achieve. You could not hear the cellist ...

Re: String quartet experts - what is going on here?
In my opinion a very congested sound. Due to the small room and the miking. I suppose the LDC mics (on whatever settings they were on) did little to herlp as well. The overall sound was not very pleasant and detail at times very muddied - and the playing was a bit off too at certain moments. It ...

Re: New Mic Preamp or New Audio Interface
For what it's worth, I have a Warm Audio mic and I'm very happy with it. :) But I'm sure next time I'm in the market for something I'll discard the reviews from trusted sources and listen to a random troll who pops up sporadically to shout at people. Seems like a sound approach. I have a cold audio ...

Re: Honest mic reviews for Youtube
Very interesting, and I agree with you up to a point. But are you saying that many of us have spent a lot of money which is really wasted? As it happens my most expensive mics are all just sub £700 and I have others from £200-£500. It's perhaps true that many mic's fulfil a "fashion" for some people, ...

Re: Ribbon Mic Query
I would have thought the Neumann's would be fine. i take it these are the omni version. KM184s are cardioids. The omni version is the KM183 (diffuse-field equalised). Thanks, my mistake! I used to look at the KM183's and seriously thought of getting a pair. In the end I went for Royer Ribbons (R101 ...

Re: Ribbon Mic Query
I would have thought the Neumann's would be fine. i take it these are the omni version. As an ex string quartet player I don't understand the meaning of "these are amazingly clean, if sometimes a little too clinical" - since the sound the quartet may make, the overall ambiance, comes from the ...

Re: A Newbie Asks About Omni Microphones
So the 90 degree placement ‘trick’ only works for close sources? Correct. I record a grand piano with two DPA 2006C omni mics (which are diffuse field) in the upright position very close to the strings with open lid, and this works very well. So I can recommend this technique - which I originally he ...

Just one more point - if I was recording two people, one on front and the other on the back of the ribbon mic, I presume I would have to invert the back of the mic recording when editing in the DAW?

Re: Possibly really hifi query re mono listening

Re: Possibly really hifi query re mono listening
If the polarity of the signal is reversed in one channel compared to the other then they will cancel out when the signals are summed to mono. That's why it is often handy to be able to choose how a mono signal is derived and a good monitor controller will offer switchable choices of listening to ...

Re: Lazy request... XLR noise transmission isolator
Use some ort of shock mount between the plug and the thing it's fixed to? (Probably won't work). What about extra soft padding between the item and the fixture? Maybe the stand is the only possible answer? (Sorry, not much help).

Re: Mixes: art or product
The art comes from the musicians and the craft is the final version with any technical improvements where necessary. But a technician cannot make an unmusical performance musical. This is just from a classical music viewpoint.
