Re: Please help. Loud hum in New studio!?!

Wow... I get the impression you're out of your depth here DC. Leaving unused input channels on max gain is a really basic no-no.... and the ground loop issues are an obvious problem to any competent studio builder. I said it before when you were discussing acoustic problems, it really would be ...

Re: Please help. Loud hum in New studio!?!

Excuse my bluntness DC but, WTF have you got the speakers plugged into different outlets? Simply put a 'diss strip ' on the quiet speaker's power socket and run a mains extension to the second. Then their grounds are "starred" back to the same mains ground. Dave. I did this Dave. No change. Same ...

Re: Please help. Loud hum in New studio!?!

Since the YC88 has a three conductor mains connector (IEC type 13) wouldn't you also need to isolate the piano from the control room/mixer? BTW DC, I'm assuming it's a typo but you say "So a proper XLR mic cable should use a three conductor unshielded cable with a cable like: Ground (bare metal ...

Re: Please help. Loud hum in New studio!?!

They are in different rooms, on different floors, of a large building on the other side of the Atlantic, Dave. Hugh the transformer isolators in the signal path to the Midas in the basement has reduced the hum to zero in the right JBL Eon in the live room. But I use two Eons in stereo, and the left ...

Re: Please help. Loud hum in New studio!?!

My next problem is that even with the grounds isolated (via transformers) between the upstairs live room and the Midas in the basement control room, one of the JBLs (left) has his and noise present that the other (right does not). The JBLs are plugged into different outlets. I have each of the JBL ...

Re: Please help. Loud hum in New studio!?!

Try connection the keyboard XLR outputs directly to the console, and the unbalanced quarter-inch outputs via the DTI box, to the JBLs. Does anything hum in that configuration? A DI box should have worked as well (with the ground lift activated) — but only if you used the balanced mic level out to t ...

Re: Please help. Loud hum in New studio!?!

That should read "XLR mic cables should use a two core shielded cable". Agreed. Otherwise know as a shielded twisted pair — two twisted signal wires within an overall shield. Twisted pair two-ended signal, or alternatively shielding, are both ways to achieve the same goal, canceling of the common m ...

Re: Please help. Loud hum in New studio!?!

Re: Please help. Loud hum in New studio!?!

I’ve always wired my xlrs to pins 1,2 and 3, nothing else. I connected up one day with the xlr cable I got from rode with my NT2a and got this kind of noise. Swapping to one of my cables solved the problem so I investigated the Rode cable and found one end had pin 1 shorted to the shell. One snip a ...

Re: Please help. Loud hum in New studio!?!

As a first experiment, I'd run the XLR outputs down to your recording rig in a different room, and use the unbalanced quarter-inch outputs to feed your local PA speakers. I am using unbalanced TS cables to feed the JBLs with XLRs going to the Midas. This does not cure the problem. Same hum. But, if ...

I have a Yamaha YC-88 Keyboard connected to JBL Eon active speakers in the live room and it sounds great with no hum. I am using the TRS balanced line outs of the YC-88. Re: Please help. Loud hum in New studio!?!

It certainly appears to be a ground loop. Is there any hum through the M32? Are you sure that all the wiring to the JBLs is fully balanced? If so, then the JBLs appear to have a "pin 1 problem" as a properly balanced input shouldn't be susceptible to this issue. Negative. No hum in the Midas while ...

Re: New studio build!! Your advice is cherished ❤

Personally, I'd stick with analogue multicores — maybe three 8-ways to different parts of the room.... if you're sure 24 channels is sufficiently future proof. However, if you're really keen on going modern, I'd recommend RME interfaces and MADI over fibre. Very short latency, more channels than y ...
