Re: Bad bad sound out of "L/Mono" output - plain piano patch
The only “concept” is that you’ll get something unpredicted. To be fair, if the mains are sufficiently misplaced to give rise to an L-shaped piano, our (9-10 piece) band would be playing a pub gig or something close. Close being the operative word. At one such event, I was near enough to audience mem ...

Re: Bad bad sound out of "L/Mono" output - plain piano patch
I find keyboards generally sound better (sorry to use highly technical terms here!) in stereo, so I almost always leave them (and congas!) in stereo, even though the rest of the PA’s mono. Neither upsets the solid rhythm section or vocals, and everyone seems hsppy enough. When we have to set up with ...

Re: Do I need two DI boxes?
And, to keep things simple and familiar, I prefer to always provide balanced mic-level signals to FOH... which means DI boxes for every connection. This. I find it horribly easy to forget what’s at line level, with potential loud consequences, so having everything at the same mike level is a boon, ...

Re: A question about the first reflection points
Yeah, I couldn’t do it the standard way as I have windows down one side. They’re all curtained (currently a bit too light, but heavier ones will follow); the other side has tall bookcases filled with irregularly-sized books and stuff. Thick rug on the floor and the ceiling’s open to the pitched roof ...

Re: Sony MDR-M1 - the Good, the Bad and the (very) ugly
Arp, I’ve only had them a day but think they’re tremendous, plus being a bit more sensitive than most I already have should be a bit better with the Zoom recorders in the field. I tend to use several sets concurrently (no, not on my head, silly!) so I’m more aware of the differences. But I can see me ...

Re: Sony MDR-M1 - the Good, the Bad and the (very) ugly
Hugh - it’s a good while since I used any Dymo products; my memory of the metal embosser dad brought home from work occasionally was funny-smelling tape and either a firm bond that eventually went gooey or no bond at at to speak of. Kwackman - leccy tape will do for the moment; not sure if I should e ...

Sony MDR-M1 - the Good, the Bad and the (very) ugly
Well, I just treated myself to a pair of these headphones and I’m listening to them now (with a lightning to 3.5mm adapter/DAC) on my iPhone. That’s a Good in itself; they sound a noticeable degree more accurate than most of my other cans, another Good, and are pretty light and very comfy - still mor ...

Re: ART DTI Box not as roadworthy as I'd like...
Mine’s been in irregular use for over a decade with no issues.
Reading this thread reminded me of a friend, only about 4 years older than me, who used to maintain that cleaning jack plugs with brown paper was the thing. Haven’t heard that mentioned for at least 30 years …

Re: Earth loop problem
Oops! Red face time again! Just a misleading series of searches on my part. Careless not to find it on the ART website... To be fair, they do hide it under the 'noise reduction' section which, while kinda relevant is counter-intuitive. Well, yes, they’re taking advantage of me not having much grip l ...

Re: Earth loop problem
Oops! Red face time again! Just a misleading series of searches on my part. Careless not to find it on the ART website, though that seems to decide to show me stuff almost randomly, probably due to my limited computer skills dwindling further! I am a recent DTI convert, largely because I decided to ...

Re: Earth loop problem
ART appears to have discontinued the DTI; I had one and have got another on order. Not sure what the best alternative might be, though from experience I’d usually want none, sometimes 1 or 2 and seldom, if ever, more. Nevertheless, me being me, I could use a couple more as the belt to my braces.

Re: AKG D190e - is this mic a secret?
For concertina work, you can get the Uzi in .45 ACP. I always wondered why you’d want a .45 Uzi; now I know! I still have a couple of 190Es; I say that because “pair” seems a bit pretentious. I think work bought them for me, as they came from RS Components. Don’t remember using them much, although I ...

Re: I closed my Laptop Lids forever
I tried running Macs beyond obsolescence, i.e. the 7 or so years from new to unsupported. The first year or two was mostly OK but eventually I had so many things that wouldn’t run I decided to go new again. That was a lot harder than it should have been, going on to a 2015 27” iMac, so now I run fro ...

Re: Organ recording commission - challenges ahead
Nazard, I have a HOSA CD which is all Suffolk and Norfolk organs. So from my evidence it would appear to be local. I’d love to be involved in that area of things and I’m naturally inclined to smaller parish church organs than cathedral behemoths. I feel I need a bit (lot?) more practice before I lea ...

Re: Organ recording commission - challenges ahead

Re: Organ recording commission - challenges ahead
Thanks for the various comments on low end response in omni mikes. Clearly not an area where the particular needs of organ recordists in particular situations chimes with the normal run of things. Thanks for the kind offer, Hugh. I’m not sure a stand that tall wouldn’t just get the floor reflections but from the ceiling - not sure how high it is in the south aisle, but a cathedral it ain’t! Organ recording commission - challenges ahead
I’m pleased to report that at last one of my cunning plans has worked out as I cunningly planned it.
