Re: R3 or LS50 original/LS50 Ann/LS50 Meta for mixing and mastering busy classical/vgm tracks

Even the budget Crestas that my lad has in his room have much better imaging than certain studio favourites that I've compared them too. I have the original Crestas, dated 1970, which have been in the family since new and the Falcon BBC LS3/5a gold badge. I bought all the parts and cabinet from ...

Re: R3 or LS50 original/LS50 Ann/LS50 Meta for mixing and mastering busy classical/vgm tracks

KEF have made some great, legendary drivers, but their own speakers? no, not really.

With respect, Tony, that is simply not true and certainly not in April 2025 when they make some extraordinarily good speakers!

Re: Transmission Line Monitors - Obsolete?

I think a company called IMF was one of the first, Yes, in 1978, for example, IMF had three transmission line monitors for sale, the TLS 50 II, TLS 80 II and Reference Professional Monitor Mk IV. The latter cost £803.68 per pair, inc Vat which works out at £4330 when inflation is taken into account. ...

Re: US-Built Audio PC recommendations?

Puget systems look good, I've used their site info and tools for some time, but as they are US based and I'm UK, I've never bought one of their PCs. They now make audio centred PCs:

Re: Snake Oil

I did a Google search for the advantages of oxygen free copper over standard copper cables and the first two pages of results were from audiophile cable companies. I saw nothing from an authoritative source. For normal audio cables OFC and silver are just marketing in my opinion. Many years ago I ...

Re: Choir on chancel steps, organ in chancel - Crucifixion!

I don't know the acoustic, either, but looking at online images, I think the organ may well be plenty loud enough I am unsure how you can determine that from photographs, but I am sure it does what it was built to do, that is, accompany a choir and lead a congregation. As a solo instrument, the ...

Re: Recommend coax cable for RF please

Also, can anyone explain the difference between these two products, and price points? Thanks for any insight. Telegartner connectors are very high quality, branded, connectors, whereas the CPC assemblies have generic BNC plugs. The Canford BBC spec cable is slightly less lossy at 1Ghz than RG58 ...

Re: Recording Magazine - September 1970

I believe the OPA604 is the recommended opamp upgrade for the Quad 405

Yes, that's what I used in my Quad 405 rebuild, currently £4.74 (inc VAT) from Mouser UK. I calculated that in today's prices, a 741 in 1968 cost the equivalent of about £20!

The LM301 also came out in 1968 and was the original input opamp in the Quad 405.

Re: When, and why did key changes go out of fashion?

Look at Bach for instance when confronted with the new fangled Well Tempered Klavier, or was it the piano-forte - a keyboard that allowed dynamics! He went out and wrote 48 Preludes and Fugues ! Temperament is a fascinating area to study: is equal temperament always 'right'? For example, many large ...

Thanks for the links, the Benchmark white papers are always worth a read. Topping are making a name, one of the current 'disruptors' in the HiFi industry. Anyway, in Rod Elliott's HiFi headphone amp, (113), he says, "The use of a 120 Ohm output resistor is recommended, as this is supposed to be the standard source impedance for headphones. Very interesting. Just looking at a few specs, the Audiolab 9000A has a headphone output impedance of 2.35ohms. Re: Headphones impedance RME digiface

The output impedance, headphones, of the Lynx Hilo 2 is 0.6 ohms and since the original Hilo has identical headphone specs, that too is likely to be similar to 0.6 ohms.
