I put a piezo pickup under a few chopsticks with rubber bands across them and, viola, an out of tune but cool sounding plucked bass!
Ugly as heck but suited the track (or so I keep telling myself!)

Re: Composing with Automation vs Mixing - new workflows?
1) yes - communication with the post team is very important so you are all on the same page 2) unless your studio is the same quality as the final mix house you might be limiting how good your music could sound if the mix house doesn’t have the option to tweak stems. 3) At the final mix directors/p ...

Re: What’s your Mac traveling rig?
Yes I have quite the collection of cables too.
Apple wants $85Cdn for a 1 meter thunderbolt 5 cable.
For my traveling setup I might need 4-5.
I can see the day when there is a black market for stolen cables.

Re: What’s your Mac traveling rig?
Ah yes - I haven’t explored how well daisy chaining works with thunderbolt so eventually I will have to unless I get one of those powered hubs that have all the usb and thunderbolt jacks (inputs? connectors?). I have a CalDigit one connected to my desktop. This whole business of thunderbolt 3, 4 and ...

What’s your Mac traveling rig?
I am looking to do sketches to partially finished tunes when I travel. I have a small budget and I am thinking a refurbished silicon Macbook, an external drive for my libraries, a 2 octave portable keyboard and maybe a 2 input interface if the Macbook doesn’t have a headphone jack. Even though there ...

Re: Coping with hearing loss
I had forgotten the sound of wind blowing through the trees or even the rustle that your clothing makes when it moves. Sometimes I rub my ear just to hear the sound that makes now.

Sometimes used cards come up for a good price on some sites. I can’t imagine cheaper than a good soldering iron but you might get lucky.

Re: Couch guitars
I rotate and the current in reach guitar is an old Yamaha nylon string. It was a steal back then at $125. Still inspires and fun to noodle on.

Re: Another Mic Comparison
The thing that drew me to the Earthworks was their philosophy of a very flat frequency response. My first mic was an Earthworks and Earthworks pre and they taught me a lot about mic technique and using my ears.
Your choice of mic pre for your Earthworks tests may have impact.

Re: Another Mic Comparison
I don’t have many mics but the CM3’s always surprise me. Serious bang for the buck. Recently I picked up the new inexpensive Earthworks. Can’t recall the model number, it’s not on the mic. Looking forward to comparing that to my others.

Re: AI Guitarist
I occasionally pull out the Kontakt instrument Session Guitars Picked Acoustic. Some of the strumming is excellent. The guitars sit nicely in a track. I can’t recall if there is a way to mess with the feel to get a more human imprecise vibe

Re: Recommended Book for Mastering Logic Pro?
As much as I love books and I remember reading the original Logic manuals cover to cover numerous times, does it make sense to buy something committed to book form when there will be new upgrades right around the corner? The updates seem fast and furious and unexpected these days.

Re: Another Question About the Depth of Field SOS Article
I tried this when it was suggested here awhile back. I couldn’t quite get it to work but got close. My main test was trying to make a close mic’d marimba sound like it was at the back of the hall. Too many instruments are sampled to be solo instruments rather than sit in with other players. I haven’t ...

Re: Headstock tuners
I have a generic clip on which gets me close enough. I justify “close enough” by telling myself a little out-of-tuneness is ok because the ear will know it’s not a plugin or Ai or other form of non-human. On the other hand I tend to lightly quantize most of my playing because I can never accurately p ...

Re: Behringer price alert
Same here, the interest and the less than a month grace period to pay it back is a killer. I remember a few years back a friend bought a big ticket item with his card and then returned it. He received the frequent flyer points for it but they never took them back so he flew somewhere. I can’t i ...

Re: Interface self noise or ???? Puzzle
I never knew these existed. Similar idea like the ones for optical sockets. I will admit to being a bit of a neat freak when it comes to maintaining gear. I like to take the vacuum to all flat surfaces like keyboards, top of monitors and mixers etc so maybe a bit of a vacuum to sockets on the back ...

Re: Interface self noise or ???? Puzzle

Also as I have high frequency loss I was concerned that there were frequencies in my mixes that others could ...
