Re: Another Question About the Depth of Field SOS Article

Am I right in thinking that the effect created is as if the listener is "positioned in each of the spaces"? To make this clearer, the method in the article creates the sound heard at each of the three points in the room? And when these are mixed the listener hears all three positions simultaneously ...

Another Question About the Depth of Field SOS Article

Hi All, After reading the Depth of Field SOS Article (04/25) I have a question. I understand the concept of setting up the three different acoustic spaces. Am I right in thinking that the effect created is as if the listener is "positioned in each of the spaces"? To make this clearer, the method in ...

Re: Caig Deoxit and other Contact Cleaners... What's the difference?

I'm about to embark on some maintenance and repairs of a mixture of Hifi and studio gear. The info above on cleaners vs lubricants is very helpful. Just wanted to check that it's ok to use a cleaner+lubricant on switches? Or is it better to use a contact cleaner with no lubricant on switches? Cheers!

Re: Editing and Digital Clicks

Hugh Robjohns wrote: Mon Jan 13, 2025 12:54 am As for your example, any step change in amplitude between adjacent samples creates a non-valid waveform with frequency content far above the nyquist limit, thus generating a spurious aliased output.

So what constitutes a "step change"?

Editing and Digital Clicks

Hi All, Here's something I don't have a very good understanding of - when editing digital audio, it's possible to create "clicks" depending on the edit points. These clicks tend to be more pronounced depending on how "discontinuous" the waveform is. Now, any non-stationary waveform (i.e. anything ...

Re: Compressor Release Question

All factually true, and all simplifications that won't affect the user's operation of the compressor in any practical way. But that's often what's needed in a user manual aimed at the technically illiterate (as most who need the manual usually are). It's similar to telling someone that pressing the ...

Thought On This 6dB Guide?

Hi All, I know that there's a lot of discussion out there about various EQ guides such as pink noise (-3dB/oct), brown noise (-6dB/oct) and especially something in-between (-4.5dB/oct). I came across a slightly different version of this idea in which the guide is "flat" up to 1kHz and then tapers ...

Re: Compressor Release Question

I keep banging on about the importance of the engineering side of 'audio engineering'.... but this is a classic example of where some understanding of basic electronics makes the workings of a compressor so obvious. In this case, it's the concept of a simple passive RCR filter. Imagine a capacitor ...

Re: Compressor Release Question

Thanks, it's surprising how many explanations of this don't make it clear. And with regards to your "automated fader" analogy, I like to think of the attack and release settings as the fader having some "stiffness" that can be different depending on whether it's moving up or down. Cheers!

Compressor Release Question

Hi All, I just read through the excellent discussion of how compressor release works here https://www.soundonsound.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=47003&start=40 - thanks Hugh for the clear explanation. Hi All, I recently completed a mix for a client and (as expected) there were some revisions requested. Hi All,

I came across these headphones in my travels on the interwebs:

Doesn't seem to be much info about them.

Any thoughts on these?

Cheers,

Headphone Frequency Response Curves

Hi All, I'm finding myself mixing more and more on headphones these days. Currently I'm using HD650s and DT770s. I tend to find it hard to judge the low end using the HD650s. I also find the DT770s very bright. So I've been doing some homework with the aim of getting some new headphones. One thing ...

I understand the technique and use it all the time (in the box). I'm interested in this from a historical perspective - there's so much info out there about Abbey Road and the gear they had - the consoles, outboard, plates, etc. I also build my own gear so I'm curious about whether they used ...

Just curious! So much talk about the technique and from what I've read the consoles didn't have HPF/LPF.

What EQ Was Used for the Abbey Road Reverb Technique?

Hi All,

Quick question - what EQ was used for the original Abbey Road reverb technique (i.e. putting a HPF/LPF before the reverb send)?

XLN Audio Addictive Drums 2 - It's Just a Host, Right?

Hi All,

I'm thinking of getting XLN Audio's Addictive Drums 2. What I'm not clear about is whether this is just a host for the expansion packs or whether it comes with a kit (or kits) already installed? I couldn't find anywhere on their website that explains this.

Cheers,

Chris

Anyone Using a Tape Recorder as an Effect?
