And another one:

The release time controls how quickly the gain reduction returns to zero after the detector drops below the threshold value.

Re: Compressor Release Question

I keep banging on about the importance of the engineering side of 'audio engineering'.... but this is a classic example of where some understanding of basic electronics makes the workings of a compressor so obvious. In this case, it's the concept of a simple passive RCR filter. Imagine a capacitor ...

Re: Compressor Release Question

Thanks, it's surprising how many explanations of this don't make it clear. And with regards to your "automated fader" analogy, I like to think of the attack and release settings as the fader having some "stiffness" that can be different depending on whether it's moving up or down...

Compressor Release Question

Hi All, I just read through the excellent discussion of how compressor release works here https://www.soundonsound.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=47003&start=40 - thanks Hugh for the clear explanation. Am I right in thinking that if we have a steady signal that's 6dB above the threshold, and it sudde...

Mix Revision Workflow Question

Hi All, I recently completed a mix for a client and (as expected) there were some revisions requested. When I started doing them I realised that I didn't have a good workflow for this process so I'm interested in finding out how others manage this. For example, say you have three revisions requested...

Phonon SMB-01L Headphones

Hi All,

I came across these headphones in my travels on the interwebs:

https://phonon-inc.com/portfolio/smb-01 ... s/?lang=en

Doesn't seem to be much info about them.

Any thoughts on these?

Cheers,

Chris

Headphone Frequency Response Curves

Hi All, I'm finding myself mixing more and more on headphones these days. Currently I'm using HD650s and DT770s. I tend to find it hard to judge the low end using the HD650s. I also find the DT770s very bright. So I've been doing some homework with the aim of getting some new headphones. One thing t...

Re: What EQ Was Used for the Abbey Road Reverb Technique?

I understand the technique and use it all the time (in the box). I'm interested in this from a historical perspective - there's so much info out there about Abbey Road and the gear they had - the consoles, outboard, plates, etc. I also build my own gear so I'm curious about whether they used somethi...

Just curious! So much talk about the technique and from what I've read the consoles didn't have HPF/LPF.

What EQ Was Used for the Abbey Road Reverb Technique?

Hi All,

Quick question - what EQ was used for the original Abbey Road reverb technique (i.e. putting a HPF/LPF before the reverb send)?

Cheers,

Expansion packs are just that, to expand the standard drum sounds in the package.

XLN Audio Addictive Drums 2 - It's Just a Host, Right?

Hi All,

I'm thinking of getting XLN Audio's Addictive Drums 2. What I'm not clear about is whether this is just a host for the expansion packs or whether it comes with a kit (or kits) already installed? I couldn't find anywhere on their website that explains this.

Cheers,

Chris

Anyone Using a Tape Recorder as an Effect?

Hi All, I know there's been a few articles in SOS over the years about using tape however the most recent one I've come across seems to be about using it for recording in preference to digital (e.g. Buying a Used Tape Machine back in 2010). Re: DBX162SL Attack and Release Settings

Dbx's use of the rate description is, technically, the correct way to do it, and your interpretation is right: if the rate is 4dB/ms, then 4dB of gain reduction will take 1ms, and 8dB of gain reduction would take 2ms. In comparison, the attack /release times specified on most dynamics processors ar...
