Re: The cold reality of synthesizers
So, that's great for making music at a given time, but for composers who write scores that they hope will be played in the future, they are a little dangerous! What you hear at a classical concert/recording isn’t what Mozart et al would have heard, the instruments have all evolved over time, even t ...

Re: Putting ourselves out of work
I suppose it depends how far back in the process you consider it to be cheating. Using preset synth sounds, purchased drum, instrument and vocal samples, midi drum patterns and now AI drummer. The latter I use after many years of using a very basic rhythm I’d ‘programmed’ with a view to doing prope ...

Re: SOS @ 40 - give us your Comments!
I have been buying SOS magazine since issue one. I subscribed to other magazines that were about recording studios such as Studio Sound. You could say that SOS introduced me to the digital side of studio technology, initially my home studio was all analogue, SOS made it a hybrid set up and now of ...

Re: No sound when i play
The controller keyboard is most probably sending out on a different midi channel, you need to make sure they match or set the receiving synth to ‘All’ if you’re recording one track at a time and not doing anything more complicated with midi or using a multi-timbral synth.

Youtube is a monopoly
I would say ‘oligopoly’ as there are other video streaming services available.

Re: Rick Beato v Universal Music Group
The videos that I would have an issue with are the ‘first listening’ reaction ones especially when, apart from a few small jump cuts, they don’t even have a regular commentary or pauses to discuss each section. The only positives are when they (usually not into that genre) find that classic track enj ...

Re: How to put up an acoustic cloud that can't be attached to the ceiling?
I didn’t want to attach a sound cloud to my studio ceiling so I made a wooden framework that rested on top of two IKEA bookshelves that were opposite each other and stapled a lightweight surplus duvet to it. The varied size of books and CDs in the cabinets act as diffusers.

Re: World changing life changing milestone keyboard wanted, now
So instead of fiddling with all the knobs and a menu systems modelled on a Russian Egg etc, you just ask it to do something like we ask CHatGPT, DeepSeek etc? I saw an advert for something like this recently and I must admit I was a bit underwhelmed with the result, but maybe you have to repeat the ...

Re: Tuning ambiance ?
I read recently that it was pioneered at Abbey Road studios, the top and bottom frequencies were rolled off before being sent to the EMT reverb plates or echo chambers and sometimes the middle was scooped out to avoid conflicting with the intelligibility of the vocals.

Re: Your process of recording vocals
I love that effect, though I associate it more with Clannad/Enya.
Long reverbs, yes, but not the Ss if my memory serves me well.

Re: Your process of recording vocals
Firstly some careful editing to remove/reduce pops, esses and breaths
Unless your name was George Michael who seemed to boost the ‘s’ sounds into a bright long reverb.

Re: Near-final mix when recording vocals?
Once you get to more modern times with multiple bands of parametric or semi-parametric EQ on mixing desks, then you start to get the ‘we’ll fix it in the mix’ attitude coming in and people with less than optimal voices but lots of good looks could have the EQ tools used on their voice to make them s ...

Re: Near-final mix when recording vocals?
In the early days it was a live performance, everyone in the same room, so presumably eq would be used to remove unwanted frequencies and used to boost other frequencies so that they stood out and enhanced that instrument/ vocalist. Positioning and choice of microphone was considered to be more ...

Competitions ‘You may not submit another entry at this time‘

Does this mean I can have multiple ...

Re: Arturia Polybrute 12
I can’t say I ever really programmed the DX7. I would take an existing voice and then change the algorithm and later when I bought the E-Magic editor cartridge (Atari) I would use the random generator.

Re: Arturia Polybrute 12
But, is it worth paying that price? and exactly how much would it affect the bottom line in my music? I paid the equivalent of that for my DX7 many years ago. Our perception of value has become distorted by all the plugin instruments that are now available. For live work it might be a different ...

Ha ha! You actually click on the Windows logo button, which accesses a whole load of functions — documents, pictures, programs, user-created access tiles, config settings, etc — with one option being the power-related options. It's entirely logical if you understand the concept... I don’t know if th ...

Discuss.... I might not remember this exactly as it was so long ago but I had a MBP with a dual boot Windows system and in order to stop Windows you had to click on the ‘start’ button, not very logical. Windows historically is full of bloatware and in the early days of audio, maybe midi too, y ...
