"Click here if your desktop/laptop audio contains strange noises"

Martin, I'm probably kidding myself, but I prefer to call mine 'music'.

Re: Windows 8

Concerning the use of DAWs and digital recording with Win8 in the RT 'Metro' mode, I believe I saw the most ridiculous statement from Microsoft recently claiming that 100 ms of latency was 'okay'. RT is going to be entirely rubbish for our camp, so I suggest forgetting all about that. Now, assuming ...

Re: Is Neil Young wrong about mp3s?

I don't think it's the fault of the user. Even most of the musicians I know are pretty clueless about the various codecs and formats available in which to render their music, so how can we expect the average listener to understand any of this? They take what they can get in most cases, and you can't...

Re: DPC Latency Survey - please contribute

SteveE, Sorry I didn't respond sooner. I must not have set this thread on 'notify' and I'm just seeing it again now. I would gladly recommend a better nVidia driver, except that from all I've heard different drivers for different computers (this sort of refrain beginning to sound all too familiar). ...

Re: Plugins

Oh, silly me. Was a busy day and got AU all mixed up with UAD. No, I am not dyslexic. Still puzzled at the choice of those and not others equally or more popular. I don't even like the IK Multimedia company and its registration process and, otherwise, am only familiar with Waves of these.

Re: Decent VST Reverb Plugin Wanted

If verbs are always sounding metallic on your Sonar, then somthing is possibly set incorrectly, because the engine and build on that one is nearly identical to many others. In fact, it been shown that most DAW are practically the same for (set flat) sound. People are always saying they prefer the 's...

Re: Your Recommended Free PC Software

I mainly want to hop on here right now and post a warning about a couple of constant problem download-hosting websites. Beware of BrotherSoft, softpedia, and to a lessor extent cNet. These sites are the ones that try to get you to download the wrong software, such as PDF editors, agree to participat...

Re: Plugins

smash, I totally agree! FabFilter is a great plugin -- an extreme toy to those who don't know how to run it, but it's very useful for certain unusual EQ needs and the like. This one resides in my VST sub-folder of the extreme, bizarre and special-duty. Speaking of which, if you like this one, there ...

Re: DPC Latency Survey - please contribute

Discussion of latency issues from DPC and ISR is what lured me to this forum in the first place. I guess some users can toss hard pagefaults in there for good measure, too. Oh, and I believe I hate every nVidia driver ever designed, and each newer one seems to behave worse than the one before -- dri...

Re: Plugins

I voted for Waves merely to accommodate your poll, but I really wish you had offered more choice (or an option for 'none of the above'!). I mean, UAD requires Apple, yes? Well then, some 85% or more won't be able to vote for those because of the system they own and use. I just heard again that Apple...

Re: Survey of Recommended PC Laptop Models

Good points, Martin. Yes, does anyone know how many different Intel CPU chips have been brought into existence in just the last two years? It made my eyes sore scanning the list. To your final point -- I used to be amazed at how many DAW users I was regularly meeting who still cling to their Windows...

Re: Buying My First Studio Laptop <£650

Returning to Wombat's big question one more time, there is another rather good reason for basing a DAW on a 'portable' (and I'm assuming what is meant is a laptop and not some little pad): Laptops and notebooks are being offered more frequently with many or all the bells and whistles of those dinosa...

Re: Survey of Recommended PC Laptop Models

Thanks for those. Current stuff. I've read back in this thread and it goes into the too distant past shortly. The state of the PC seems to be changing so rapidly -- something like a cycle of every three months now, whereas last I was out shopping it was almost a whole year before prices and features...

Re: Survey of Recommended PC Laptop Models

I will be looking for a second laptop this year that I can dedicate solely to audio and recording. Obviously, I need to study threads such as this one and various other references before I buy. In the meantime, two thoughts on this subject: First of all, regarding Apple -- any Apple computer compara...

Re: USB 3.0 audio interfaces ?

Some very correct and interesting points made there, Dave. I think a Newbies thread or subforum is a great idea but in all my travels have seen exactly none. I loved when FireWire came out but often heard more wailing than praise, as approximately half my acquaintances could not get stable, usable r...

Re: Free Or Cheap DAW For Windows 7

photvid, when I needed a break from the actual music production I became drawn in to the more geek-y aspects of much of the audio software we use. It makes for a entertaining hobby. The free version of Podium is at least several months and versions old now. New releases have started to come out at a...

Re: USB 3.0 audio interfaces ?

I think it will take nearly forever for the bulk of manufacturers to offer their products in builds that can take advantage of USB 3, but as long as everything remains compatible in a USB 3 socket I'll be fine. I compare it to the glorious new age of 64 bit, in which so many plugins are still unavai...

Re: Free Or Cheap DAW For Windows 7

Greetings PC Numpty! I mean, Dave. I should say, it helps if you read the Guide, but I rarely read them either. And it is no 400-page beast, the kind that has become so common among DAWs nowadays. It is short and to the point. In any case, Podium has a unique setup for new projects. Once experienced...

Re: Free Or Cheap DAW For Windows 7

alexis, I'm sorry to say that the 30-day trial of Cubase you mention is NOT free at all. It requires that any interested person first buy the stupid dongle for roughly $30 US (and usually wait until arrival if no local dealer), and it is needed to install and operate the trial package. If one decide...

Re: Free Or Cheap DAW For Windows 7

I'm surprised that in a forum that seems much more mature than ones such as Reaper or Cubase, in which you often find outright trolls or otherwise a bunch of young kids arguing, that there would be so much squabbling and what one member here aptly termed 'DAW snobbery'. First off, don't be pushed in...
