Re: American Standard Pitch Notation, a true work of evil.

Mind you,... I tend to sol-fa along to anything I hear. But hey ho. :D That was what this guy said :D He could immediately sing anything back in sol-fa apparently without conscious thought, it was inpressive. Just a thought, it's basically the same for melody as Nashville charts are for chord seque...

Re: American Standard Pitch Notation, a true work of evil.

Strangely, having not even thought about Tonic Sol-Fa (apart from remembering that the young, English, Gypsy Jazz virtuoso 'Reme Harris' name was inspired by the system) for many years I was at a beginners improvising workshop playing rhythm guitar for my mate who was running the session and one of...

Re: American Standard Pitch Notation, a true work of evil.

It's still in very common use in France but on a fixed basis (as far as I can work out), i.e. Doh is always C, Re is always D, etc. I discovered this when I was asked to play at a wedding in Lyon and was presented with a chord sheet just before the event without any letters that I was familiar with...

Re: American Standard Pitch Notation, a true work of evil.

I really like letters and numbers to identify notes. I don't like Do, Re, Mi, Fa, etc etc. So I'm cool with the letters and numbers. Anyone here still use sol-fa these days? It’s still my go to method for working out melodies. As a means of hearing something and being able to write it down quickly ...

Re: Frequency Dependent Peaks When Bouncing

Of course when mixing we spend a lot of time ensuring that competing frequencies aren't obscuring each other and causing trouble - kick and bass being obvious contenders. Even so I quite regularly find that when bouncing down a mix and looking at the waveform, there's often just one or two peaks th...

Re: Monitor Controller Question

I know that the Heritage Audio Baby RAM is passive, but has anyone used this unit? I swapped out my Drawmer cmc2 for the Heritage Audio Baby RAM. I had ground hum issues through my monitors with the Drawmer and instead of faffing about, decided to go passive (The Drawmer also had a scratchy left ch...

Re: Rotating horizontal speakers

Thanks for the reply Hugh. I’ll be interested to try that out with my KH 310s too and see what the result is. I have a similar set up to you (without all the fancy stuff I hasten to add! :D ) My music area is a little bit larger (around 5m x 4m), similar desk size and two screen monitors side by sid...

Re: Rotating horizontal speakers

Hugh Since there has been mention of the Neumann KH 310a speakers. In your article about your own studio (SOS June 2020), I see you have your KH 310s placed with the bass woofers to the outside: https://www.soundonsound.com/techniques/studio-sos-making-small-room-sound-good The manual suggests the b...

Re: Plug in to remove reverb to recorded dialogue on film

I’ve found Acon Digital’s Deverberate to be useful. You can try before you buy too.

Re: Recording acoustic instruments in a small room

May I suggest that you do, at least this once? Spend some time getting a balance you both enjoy; you might even like it! … and if possible, that both of you use the same make/model of headphones (closed back preferably). You’ll still have good eye contact too. Before dismissing the notion of headph...

Re: Suggestions for Software Piano instruments

I find Pianoteq a bit strange. Sometimes it sounds a bit clanky to my ears. Same here. Hard to pinpoint, but it doesn’t sit right with me. Something about the overtones? I keep returning to the Galaxy Vintage D. It’s pretty old now, but I find it sits well in a busy mix and stands alone well in som...
