Re: SOS @ 40 - give us your Comments!
Many years ago when the magazine used to carry reviews of readers' music I sent in a tape of something I worked on with a friend of mine (got a reasonable review and some constructive feedback from one Mr Paul White). My friend had done the artwork for it. What I didn't know at the time I sent it in ...

Re: Get MixBox for £20
I would definitely recommend getting it at that price!
Some people dislike the IK Product Manager but I've had no particular issue with.

Re: Get MixBox for £20
Yes I believe that IK Multimedia have indeed discontinued MixBox, which is a shame. I have it and while I don't use it much, it has on a couple of occasions come in very useful.

Re: When will I start to lose my high frequency hearing?
My hearing has slowly lost top-end over the past few years - I don't know exactly how much, but what bothers me more is it's also developed a sort-of resonance that in particular makes tin whistle sounds almost painful :( I've always had something like that and yes it is very annoying. I can ...

Re: When will I start to lose my high frequency hearing?
And here's me at 56 with very little above 7kHz! I only found this out as a result of an observation on one of my mixes by Drew (which is ironic in the light of what he says above) - he could hear a ringing at about 7.5kHz that I just couldn't hear which sent me off on the path that ended up with ...

Re: Mac Studio underside - yuck!
One should always keep one's undercarriage clean
Reminds me of when I opened up my daughter's laptop recently - the sheer amount of dust that had accumulated inside!!

Re: "The Song of Hiawatha", Saturday 12th July
Went well. Decent turnout considering the relatively obscure program and location.
And us men were allowed to ditch our jackets given the heat.

"The Song of Hiawatha", Saturday 12th July
Not my usual self-promotion. This is for our choir, Rochester Choral Society, concert tomorrow, a slightly abridged performance of all three parts of Samuel Coleridge Taylor's "Song of Hiawatha". Also finishing up with Parry's "Blessed Pair Of Sirens". If anybody is interested in coming along, it's ...

Re: SOS FOR ARTISTS has arrived!
I shall be joining up too next payday. There's not much in the plug-ins that I don't already have access to or something similar, but there is still a lot of value in it for me, and like Chris I feel SOS is a company worth supporting.

"Clearing the Decks"
I've got a couple of recent albums on Bandcamp. Some of which has been on Soundcloud, most hasn't. These consist of pieces I have written over the years that haven't been part of anything else. https://richhanson.bandcamp.com/album/clearing-the-decks-volume-1 https://richhanson.bandcamp.com/album ...

Re: Ears and EQ imbalance/Hearing test accuracy
Back when I started to suspect I had issues I tried this test:
https://hearingtest.online/
Needs a quiet space and a decent pair of headphones.
When I went for a proper hearing test, the results matched very closely the online test.

Re: AI Music Generators
AI doesn't make music, it just makes something that sounds like music. A bit like me taking a picture of the The Mona Lisa and saying that its art; its not art, its a photograph of art. This. I reject the comparison with previous technologies. Whatever you think of distorted guitars, synthesisers ...

Re: USB DVD
I bought a cheapy USB DVD drive ages ago for a PC with a poorly drive.
I have successfully used it on my MacBook too.
These things are generally class compliant, so the OS will automatically know how to deal with them.

Re: Stopping buying stuff
Ever since I installed Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol (oh! the irony!) I get a core MIDI error every time I start Logic. I don’t. I have an Apple M1 MBP 13” laptop. I have an Apple M1 laptop, and I still can’t install Reaktor, as it’s not supported yet. Yes it is. I've just double checked and R ...

Re: IKMultimedia Total Studio Max 4
In terms of the sample content, you can install as much or as little as you like. 100 GB will be enough for just the plug-ins, but only enough for a small amount of the sample content. I keep my sample content on an external SSD - I've just had a look at the IK stuff and it takes up 627 GB.

Re: I discovered Cherry Audio soft synths
I find that on the CA synths with varying quality (oversampling) settings there is a noticeable sweetening of the sound for higher settings at the expense of CPU usage. I don't normally worry too much about the CPU though as I tend to convert them to audio as soon as I'm happy (ok, less unhappy :D ...

Re: One Synth Challenge 2024
This is all fascinating stuff, and proves that the choice of a synth doesn't predetermine the likely musical output. Like others here, I have no chance of matching the sounds with the list of synths, and although like Bob I did recognise a familiar voice tucked into one of the tracks, that still ...
