Re: Do you jump in?
I wanted to but......... Story time: 10 years ago or so I was out on a date with my wife (gigged that Friday night, gig the following day on Sunday) on a rare Saturday night off. We went to hear a friend's band on their first gig playing out; outdoor venue on a dock overlooking the bay, perfect ...

Re: Wind quintet plus solo cello positioning
As a professional woodwind player myself, (clars/fl/saxophones/bassoon) I would suggest the standard ww quintet semi-circle with the solo cellist "out front in the center between the two outermost instruments". It's refreshing to see that classical musicians visit this forum. Happy Holidays from the ...

Re: Choir mic setup
I use Shure MX202B/C mics for choral applications. Depending on the numbers in the chorus; Assuming that the chorus is in the standard set up (Sop on left, Alto on right, tenor center left, bass center right) I use four mics for a 100 member chorus (one each section for Soprano/Alto/Tenor/Bass). If ...

Re: How Important Is Optimal Gain Structure In A Modern PA System?
I've always taken an approximate approach (and 'under-gained') because, at the level of bands I've worked with, most of them will promptly turn their instruments up louder than the soundcheck as soon as they go on anyway. :headbang: ^^^^correct^^^^ Yes, all-of-them will play louder after sound ...

Re: Advice needed for a new mixer
As a minimalist, if you want to start mic'ing your drum kit I'd get a powered (active) subwoofer and patch from your subout/mono jack to the sub. I would set the sub's lowpass to 70hz. Your tops go down to 66hz thus a little overlap would work. Next: get a small unpowered analog mixer (plenty of ...

Re: Audio cables/gear stored in humid/non-climate controlled areas?
fwiw: My storage unit for the past twenty years is unheated and has concrete floors. It gets cold (20F) in the winter and outdoor temps into the 90'sF at times during the summer. That being said, my gear does-not-sit directly on the floor. Every piece of gear is elevated so that air can circulated ...

Re: Very basic stage lighting
IMO: Bands need some-sort of lighting these days.
People listen more with their eyes nowadays as opposed to years ago...or so it seems.

Re: Very basic stage lighting
I have a very 'spartan" light rig; two pars (trees) with four fixtures on each bar. fixtures: Rockville Battery Par 61 (all wired together) I have a control board I store both bars (with lights attached) in an 88 key SKB keyboard case (with foam packing). I purchased the case "used" on marketplace ...

Re: Cover bands. Choosing your sound?
Nobody cares about authenticity. Just play what you like! Don't add a jazz improv to a dance tune, and make sure a hook comes across, even if it's nothing like the original sound. I currently play in the horn section of a band that does mostly covers - adding "our" spin on most of them. When we ...

Re: PA-package for rent
Regarding lights: A basic two-tree light set is relatively inexpensive these days also LED's make chasing power a non-issue (for me at least). My lights are basic: (Rockville Battery Par 61's & a Rockville controller) for the most part. Relatively inexpensive, can be controlled remotely, not too ...

Re: PA-package for rent
When I got into local sound providing (in the late 90's) I had aspirations of adding a rental component my business. I soon discovered that when someone rents a "rig" they do not take care of it to the same extent as I would. so my advice there: get gear that is as fool-proof as possible plus when ...

Re: Newbie needing help with PA
My first thoughts: What you have listed for gear should work IMO. The mixer has two separate amplifiers in it thus you should be able to power your mains and a couple of monitors. As far as the age of the gear - I have a powered mixer that I purchased in '93 plus some speaker cabs purchased around ...

Re: 10 inch tops or 12 inch over 15 subs
A "rule of thumb" I go by:
Live band (top over sub): 10 over a 12, 12 over a 15, 15 over an 18
DJ (top over sub): 10 over a 15, 12 over an 18, 15 over double 18
I have always found that DJ's need way-more sub than a band.

Re: Amp for Cello
Kind of a topic swerve: I have mic'd cellos in string quartet/trio formats for local performances. The mics used were basic by industry standards (Senn 835) but I got really good results with what I have worked with.. Mic placement and EQ are the key IMO. 1. I orient the mic about 6-8" away aiming ...

Re: Pub Band - what's changed since 2020
Not much really IMO, however, I have noticed, a whole slew of one-man-bands playing with tracks (karaoke bands in my book) playing in places that used to hire 2/3/4 pc. groups. Also much of the new music for the past 10 years has 3 or four chords and can be done with a "looper" thus any tech savy ...

Re: Used passive PA tops for my mancave?
How big is your man-cave? My first thought: Assuming that your "man cave" is not a large room. I would imagine that those jrx speakers take a bit of distance for their sound to "come together" (blend of the horn/woofers) and your room isn't big enough for them to do so. How big is your man-cave?

Re: Question about mic'ing live drumkit
My experience drum mic'ing in live situations: less is more. I can usually get a good mix with a mic on the kick plus 1/2 OH mics. If it's a jazz gig I will orient one of the OH mics close to the hat/snare to facilitate when the drummer uses brushes... but most of the time the kick/OH's is all that ...

Re: What PA gear needed for a small country band?
It doesn't sound like you need much PA at this time but I suggest the following: - get a mixer with "at least" twice the number of channels that you think you need at this time (you-will-need those channels a year/two down the road) - get a couple of powered speakers.... an earlier post recommended ...

Re: Microphone mixer advice
Looking at the specs of your current mixer, the power output is rather lean (200 watts per side @ 4ohms isn't much). I'm all-for working with what you have but you may want to start looking in another direction.......but first: If you want to add one-more-mic to input to your current rig, get a DBX ...

Re: Inexperienced Users - X32 or A&H Qu... or...?
This may be a good place for a good-old-analog-Mixwizard. Before I went digital I mixed many gigs (including church services) on one; choir/organ/priest/cantor/lectur. I used a Rane C6 which gave me 4 channels of compression (rarely needed) plus two DBX2231 (dual channel) EQ's. The user manual ...

Re: Why do we need sound systems?

Re: Limiter for full mixes
FWIW: DJ - keep your signal/output in the green . As a sound provider I have found that I can make a non-clipped signal (LEDs in the green) way-louder than a clipped (in-the-red) signal. Give the soundman (or your amplifier/speakers) a clean signal to work with. What is so hard about keeping the ...

Re: General PA setup for band
Fusing: When I first got into doing sound (early 90's), friends of mine that owned a recording studio used an external inline-fuse when doing live sound.
