Re: iLok - worth putting up with?
I've been using iLok for ages. I lost one dongle with a Protools LE license and some PT plugins on it and consider that a blessing. The licenses still shows up in my account but since I don't have the dongle they are essentially orphaned. Everything requires maintenance in some form or other. I'd ...

Re: Logic just for a change
I've used Protools, Studio One, Reason and Reaper. S1 I used for years, the other ones I never got on with. I switched to Logic about two years ago from S1 and I like it much, much better. Once I figured out how Apple handles I/O and outboard gear, it's a no brainer for me. Studio One v2 - V4 were ...

Re: Putting ourselves out of work
It all depends on your assumptions and intentions I suppose. I'm not a fan of outsourcing my creative space to some anonymous programmer who's life focus is utterly unknowable to me. I never understood sampling riffs but I like virtual instruments. Even so, I learned to play several instruments and ...

Re: Idiot tries to build guitar!
It’s just a slight variation on Ritchie Blackmore’s scalloped fingerboard. If you publicise it, it could become the next guitar craze. Never underestimate the value of an accident. I would try a spokeshave or a drawknife to do the back of the neck. They're made for that job.

Re: Considering moving from PC to Mac. Low latency performance?
I have a two year old Mac Mini M2 Pro 32GB RAM which is not considered a holy grail machine for music judging by shootouts I've read - and I have zero issues with noise, latency or the constant background updates that bork your computer which Microsoft seems so enamored of. My sessions are almost ...

Re: What is 'Original'?
I think y'all are over thinking it. "Original" per OED def 2 is "created directly and personally by a particular artist; not a copy or imitation" One can quibble with this definition. I'd argue that the lyric content takes precedence over musical framing in making a determination although ripping ...

Re: How are my bass traps looking and what shall I fill them with?
They look great. You might find the calculators on this website useful. http://www.acousticmodelling.com/ Loose fiberglass fill may be more effective for low frequencies than rockwool. If I understand the theory correctly, lower flow resistivity is more effective at dampening lower frequencies and ...

Re: Idiot tries to build guitar!
As a professional carpenter, I highly recommend you practice with the router on several pieces of scrap before you try on the actual guitar. I'll go so far as to say, just practice simple router cuts first, then practice using the templates and cutting the shapes you want. Do not go into a routing ...

Re: Advice on new income streams
When I ran up against the wall, I got an accounting degree. Had a surprisingly great career in that field for about 20 years. Made a ton of money. Now I own a staggering amount of toys which I refer to as my retirement fund. Still play music too.

Re: Stopping buying stuff
The problem is exacerbated by devs all relying on the same 3rd/4th/5th party platform provider so all the crap looks the same except has different colors and branding. Same bugs, same limited choices, same boring uninspired caca doodoo for the consumer masses, of which I appear to be one ...

Re: Your best hackjobs
I recently discovered I could use a pen tube to isolate multicore wires in mic cables for stripping. Keep the one you need to strip out, fold the others back along the cable, insert into tube and voila! only one strand is exposed to face the wire stripper jaws - no more hassle fighting several wires ...

Re: Fender Blues Jr. ? (No classic Blues tones?.
Best thing to do imo is go to Guitar Center or another big box store with lots of stock and spend some time with the amps. Also, if any of the buskers in downtown Memphis are playing through amps, find out what they are and talk to them about how they get that tone. Every houn'dog I've ever run ...

If you can't take it with you, take someone else's.
As an aside, I find it telling that Islam is the only religion I know of that forbids charging interest on loans.

Re: Regulated vs unregulated 9V DC power supply
Does the power supply work properly with other pedals after the event? What does "blow up" mean here? Just an unresponsive pedal or a smell of burning? Smoke? Maybe it just died?
Aslo, not all pedal are center negative. A small few are center positive I believe.

Research materials. Tuning a room
Bear with the monologue, I do have a question somewhere in here...I have spent many long hours learning about room treatment, absorption, diffusion, sound "proofing" isolation, etc. I've read many articles here, have a well thumbed copy of the Master's Handbook of Acoustics, etc. I have 7 or 8 ...
