Re: Filtering 20kHz and ultrasonic noise
Thanks for the quick replies! (I love this forum) That’s exactly what I did, I got a filter installed right after the inverter, but it seems it’s not enough, which is disappointing. I’ll try to look up the other thread. This is the filter: https://www.emikon.com/en/product/emikon-dirty-electricity-5/ ...

Filtering 20kHz and ultrasonic noise
I put solar panels at my recording studio and the inverter is causing a parasitic interference at 20kHz, a spike that I can see in the Fabfilter EQ analyzer. I’ve installed a filter in the electrical system that should offer 40dB attenuation from 10k to 35k. However, it’s not attenuating as much as I ...

Re: TRS patchbay problem
Thanks Hugh! The explanation felt too long-winded already to include more details, but here's the short version: -XLR-TRS cable -> into patch point (at the front) = signal loss. -Same XLR-TRS cable -> into Neutrik NA3JJ female-to-female adaptor -> into TRS-TRS patch cable -> into same patch point ...

TRS patchbay problem
I've had some trouble with my Samson TRS patchbay that has got me puzzled. I just got a new outboard unit (SPL Vitalizer Mk3-T, it's great!). Got some XLR->TRS cables for it, and before I hooked it up permanently to the back of the patchbay, I inserted it in my mix buss hardware chain by patching ...

Re: Another grounding question! Trouble when interfacing with unbalanced gear (reamping)
This happened with both XLR plugged in. The one that goes to the interface (and gets phantom power) and the one that comes from the interface for reamping. The good thing is that the Palmer isolation transformer has no ill effect on tone at all. I might do some further troubleshooting but as long as ...

Re: Another grounding question! Trouble when interfacing with unbalanced gear (reamping)
Thanks Dave and Hugh! I’m using the Little Labs Redeye 3D and the Palmer Cappo. Both boxes fix the problem with the ground lift but the Redeye needs the extra 1:1 audio transformer to get rid of a residual hum. I’ve been on touch with Jonathan Little and he’s a bit puzzled about it too. He says his b ...

Another grounding question! Trouble when interfacing with unbalanced gear (reamping)
After rereading all the SOS articles on grounding, I'm coming here for confirmation/advice about my issue. I only experience ground loops when interfacing with unbalanced gear, specifically when reamping. Even after engaging the ground lift in a couple reamp boxes, I need to insert a a 1:1 isolation ...

Re: Impulse Responses
I'm not currently thinking of buying the Tonedexter or Voiceprint DI, but generally budget is not a main concern.

Re: Impulse Responses
Bumping this to express my interest in acoustic guitar impulse responses :) Especially I would like to learn how to record my own, using my preferred mic setup plus the output of the guitar’s pickup. The goal would be to get the mic’ed sound from the pickup. Also open to general purpose IR rec ...

Re: Kick drum splat/overload sound
Yes, I'm guilty of trying to juice as much character from the preamps as possible. It just never occurred to me that with a very fast transient, the pre clipping could be acting as a limiter. Somehow I was expecting it to clip both the pre AND the converters. Lesson learned! I will still report back ...

Re: Kick drum splat/overload sound
Thank you all - I've seen the light! Actually, the lack of lights on many preamps! I think it's 95% preamp clipping and I can't believe that after many years of faithful SOS reading I fell for this. I'm always very careful of input levels but I never realised that a preamp could run out of headroom ...

Re: Kick drum splat/overload sound
Sorry, I meant inline pad, not pre! (too late to edit the topic). Thanks for the thoughtful responses, this forum is really great! Levels are quite low all the way, the signal is coming into the interface at -20dBFS, maybe peaking at -10dBFS. I will peak at the waveforms of the splatty sounds. Good ...

Kick drum splat/overload sound
I'd like to gather some "collective intelligence" about this problem that I encounter a bit too frequently for my taste. Many times a kick drum recording will have a few hits that are over-the-top, and the sound turns to a splatty high frequency "pop" with loss of low end. Is this something of a ...

Re: TC Electronic Clarity M Meter Firmware Issue
2.1.3 has been out for a few months, fortunately. I’m reviving this thread to ask how you guys use it. I think Hugh could write an article about how to use the vector scope :) I find it invaluable for loudness metering, but the RTA is not much use, which it’s a shame. Maybe the display is too fast? I ...

Re: Multitrack location recording rig and redundancy
Any router recommendations for the Qu Pac? I think a used AirPort Extreme could be a safe bet.
I keep reading router reviews and it seems all of them have a handful of bad/scary reviews!

Re: Multitrack location recording rig and redundancy
This has all been really useful. One thing I've noticed is that many of these units are out of stock, they must have been affected by the fire at that converter manufacturer plant. I think I'm going to go for the A&H Qu Pac. I've confirmed that it can record simultaneously to USB and DAW, it's ...

Re: Multitrack location recording rig and redundancy
These are all very helpful replies, thank you all! (I love this forum!) I'm going to add the Allen & Heath Qu-PAC and Qu-SB to the list, since I think the QU Pac would be overkill. They look like VERY strong contendera, and on paper I like them way more than the Behringer X32 rack which I had also ...

Re: Multitrack location recording rig and redundancy
Actually both the Zoom and the Soundcraft were on my radar for this. However, it’s still a “single point of failure”. But at least it protects against recording media failure and/or computer failure. Not too bad!

Multitrack location recording rig and redundancy
I’m trying to put together a rig for mobile multitrack recording without breaking the bank. 16 tracks would be enough, 24 tracks perfect. I’m stumped with the redundancy aspect, as I’d like to record in two different systems so I can be protected against failure. I’d like to record straight into Logi ...

How to create an impulse response of an acoustic guitar?
I’ve been doing a lot of searching about how to create an IR of my acoustic guitar. It seems that people are running a match EQ, comparing mic and DI and creating an impulse response out of that. But I think there should be a way of skipping the match EQ, right? I suppose I could stick a monitor in f ...

Re: Clicks and pops on stop-start
I listen on calibrated monitors, always the same dial in the monitor controller, VU meters, SPL meter (which I only break out every once in a while).
It's worth checking, maybe we've been getting louder with this particular project or something.

Re: Clicks and pops on stop-start
I'm connecting through USB and the computier is fairly new, but I'll try changing the port.
I have some serious troubleshooting to do and then I'll post more.
Maybe it's just normal operation, like Hugh says.

Re: Clicks and pops on stop-start
Well, that makes sense but I’m pretty sure this wasn’t happening before. It’s a loud, high pitched click, not unlike the “ping” sound that Logic sends to test latency with the I/O plugin.
