Re: Drum room build

Thanks guys. The garage is built inside a sloping garden so the back is underneath a thick layer of earth on top of the ceiling and waterproofing, however the part that is closer to the entrance door only has about 40cm of soil on top. Here are 2 pics taken during the construction (20+ years ago), w...

Drum room build

I have a project for which I could use some guidance. I am building a drum room for simple practice (no need to record). We need to keep some of the sound from leaking outside, while having a decent sound quality inside the room. I am building this room inside an underground garage, which already ha...

Re: Pre-Master Sample Rates in 2022

If you want to release music under the Apple MfiT standard then 24/96 is the minimum... MfiT has been rebranded Apple Digital Masters, and the exact instructions are: To take best advantage of our latest encoders, use only 24-bit sources and send us the highest-resolution master file possible, appr...

Re: Seeking Mentoring / Tutulage (Mixing & Mastering)

Well it's there: the piano plays the same pattern over and over again, an ascending E♭ - G - C - D even on the last chord of the cycle, which is a major C. You might spot it more easily if you mute the right channel ;)

Re: Seeking Mentoring / Tutulage (Mixing & Mastering)

Yes the chord progression is great. It's just that on the last chord the guitars play a major third (E) while the piano plays a minor third (E♭), which clashes quite strongly to my ears.

Re: Normalizing Tracks for Final Master

I tend to end up with about +7 to +8db on the limiter. I understand that this is not gain reduction, but still it sounds like a lot of gain applied: your mix must be really quiet to begin with. Is -11 on the LUFS accurate info for final output? I am also curious if there are other meters I should b...

Re: Changes to Spotify normalization

they will no longer apply a limiter to bring quiet tracks up to the loudness target. Actually they still do, but only when the user manually selects the "loud" mode. In this case a limiter is applied when the content needs to be gained up to -11LUFS. Also, Spotify now has an album mode wh...

Re: Seeking Mentoring / Tutulage (Mixing & Mastering)

Drums This is perfectly understandable. Just keep in mind that the quality of the end result is limited by the weak link. When you listen to your mix and think that maybe it's lacking something, you might be tempted to tweak it again and again in an attempt to get there, but maybe your mix is really...

Re: Normalizing Tracks for Final Master

Does anyone have a foolproof process for normalizing the final output levels of mastered tracks? My DAW has a normalize feature. Yours too, probably. I'm sure there are plugins that do that too. But why would you want to normalize your songs? They are going to be normalized when played back on almo...

Re: Seeking Mentoring / Tutulage (Mixing & Mastering)

Hi, I skipped to the end of the thread and listened to the revised version. Here are my unfiltered thoughts: You seem to be after the best possible result, and you are focusing on mixing and mastering. In my opinion there is more room for improvement in the actual production than the post production...

Re: Mastering studio build project

Is the plan for a room-within-a-room? The diagram looks like a single-skin wall. It's not. I just assumed that it wouldn't be necessary because 1/ the area is super quiet (no roads nearby, no airways etc.) 2/ I won't do any recording 3/ currently I don't have a room in a room design and no-one is c...

Mastering studio build project

Hi, After a few years of expatriation in Asia I will be relocating to my home country (France) and I am planning on building my mastering studio on my property. There are different options but for now I am considering an outbuilding on top of the garage (which is currently 40cm underground). The loc...

Re: Acoustic Treatment Advice

Hi, I think that in your case, the first thing is to understand that if you can't change rooms or even move your listening position inside the room, then you have to considerably lower your expectations because the first and most influential parameter is the size/shape/materials of the room and the ...

Re: ISRCs for Bandcamp only release

Do I need to embed ISRCs in the audio files that I upload? There is no obligation, but it is good practice because you never know what the file is going to become in the future. If the song becomes a hit later you'll be happy that every instance of the file has your ISRC embedded. For the rest, Jam...

Re: Monitor studio placement please help !:)

An alternative is to work on monitors and check your low end regularly on headphones. If it's clear in your mind that you can't trust your room but you can trust your headphones, eventually you'll get used to the right ballpark on your monitors. If you work long hours headphones can get uncomfortable.

Re: Monitor studio placement please help !:)

Hi, With such a small room, there's not much you can do in terms of listening position since you're having almost no choice. Basically you probably have a little leeway to move back and forth from the wall with the window and that's all. Assuming your ceiling height is 2,5m, your room dimensions pla...

Re: Are Plugin Alliance taking the Mick

The problem isn't that more and more automated services pop up online; of course this is going to happen. The problem is that they are branded as "mastering", which is largely disrespecting the discipline in itself altogether. A large part of mastering is quality control, human feedback th...
