SOS Podcast "My Life In Modules"

Just wanted to say thank you for the most excellent recent podcast featuring Tony Rolando of Make Noise, I could have listened to him for hours. The previous episode of My Life In Modules, featuring the artist Scanner, was equally brilliant. More of these please. Am sure there are plenty of names in ...

Re: HDMI Switch for Mac Studio

I bought one of these in 2018 for £15 and it has always worked perfectly.

Unfortunately no longer available but am sure something similar will be?

Re: Ventura - end of the road for the Trash Can?

when there are no more OS updates, it’s time to get a new computer. That gives me 8-10 years of use before it’s time to go shopping again. This was partly the point of my original post - in my case I have a computer which was new in 2018 but will not get any more OS updates once Monterey becomes dor ...

Re: Ventura - end of the road for the Trash Can?

The standard M1 minis give the trashcan a run for their money, for some things better than the trashcan, for others not far behind. Am sure they do and it's tempting. Just not enough expansion ports, the Studio has four TB and two USB. I have quite a few external synths, drum machines, USB MIDI ...

Re: Ventura - end of the road for the Trash Can?

Thanks for the responses all, looks like I've triggered a useful discussion on related issues as well. As described, for me I will stay with the 2013 Mac Pro on Monterey until there is some update to either the OS or Logic that I feel I just can't live without. Hopefully by then decent second hand ...

Ventura - end of the road for the Trash Can?

I notice that the next MacOS, Ventura, has minimum hardware requirement of 2017 models. So even though my Mac Pro 2013 is one which was new in 2018, it won't be supported. The true defining factor for me will be when there is a Logic update which can only be installed on Ventura, from that point I ...

Re: Apple unveil Mac Studio and Studio Display

I've only ever owned two Mac's. A late 2012 Mac Mini i7 16GB (£500 off eBay in 2018) and my current 2013 Mac Pro - a 2018 model of same, 6 core 32GB (£1499 off eBay in 2021). So by that I expect I'll be buying one of these off eBay in about three years time. Unless my current Mac Pro no longer s ...

Re: Logic Pro 10.7 is out

Lots of great updates, looks really good.

And yet my personally most desired revision is still not implemented.... we still can't have white, black or shades of grey for track/region colours! :protest:

Re: Apple Event Monday 18th Oct 6pm UK time

Whether they release any new computers or not, surely it will include the announcement of Monterey? Which means if you want a brand new Mac, but want to avoid any compatibility issues for plug-ins etc., you might need to be prepared to have to 'downgrade' the OS as soon as you turn it on. Having ...

Re: An Album that altered our Musical direction

For me this happened three times in my life. Age 13: The first one - A school friend found out I had two (mono) cassette recorders at home, and asked me to make a copy of a tape to (I think) impress a girl. The tape was Tarkus, by Emerson Lake & Palmer. Prior to this my record buying was limited to ...

Re: New Mac user, any tips gratefully received

Just to bring this thread up to date, it's over three years on now from my original post and not only would I never dream of going back to Windows, I've now upgraded to a 2018 edition of the 2013 Mac Pro, 6 core 3.5GHz 32GB RAM, and just about finished installing and setting everything up on Big Sur ...

Amen to that. Desmond and your good self were invaluable to me when I switched to Mac a few years back, and I continued to enjoy learning from his wealth of knowledge. I really hope he returns.

Re: Logic step sequencer no longer indicates steps visually

For anyone interested, this is sorted now. I had my default template Project Start set to a few bars before 1 1 1 1 which obviously Logic hates. Re-set to normal and it's all good now!

Logic step sequencer no longer indicates steps visually

Can anyone who's using Logic 10.6.3 confirm if your step sequencer is still working normally? On my copy, I no longer see the steps in the step sequencer window being highlighted with a moving white border as the sequence plays when the transport is running. Am pretty sure this has only happened ...

Just buy the bloomin Buchla. You've been going on about it for years. :protest: Hugh, even if I wanted to buy one, see my secondary monitors thread, as usual, can’t get one or locate one here in Europe, can’t seem to get anything in fact, don’t know what’s happening to the supply chains. +1 for the ...

Re: mac mini confusion

Being still on a 2012 model I'm aware I will need to upgrade/modernise at some point, but the USB port issue would definitely rule out the current M1 model for me personally. Obviously it depends on how much outboard gear you are using. I have several hardware synths, controllers, etc. which are USB ...

Re: New Macs

Remember, so far, only the *low end* machines have been released. These are small, light, very capable machines designed for everyday people - not so much for people running orchestral movie score mockups with 400 tracks and 100GB of samples - in your parlance, "serious" users. This is only step ...

Re: New Macs

They need to clarify the RAM issue for those of us who want to use it for large RAM-guzzling sample libraries, where 64GB or ideally 128GB is considered essential for “serious” users, on the current Intel platform. We need to know how it equates to the new integrated RAM. Am sure all this will bec ...

Re: New Macs

All very interesting and quite exciting in a nerdy way. But I was immediately disappointed by the Mac Mini in that it only has two USB and two Thunderbolt ports (the Intel one has two and four respectively). This is just not enough and I hope the higher spec models in future have more connectivity.

I really want the new Logic update so it's time to hold my breath and go from Mojave to Catalina.
