Re: RC-505 Mk2 review

Did you update the software? My MK2 seems quite stable, so perhaps it isn't a problem anymore. There have been a couple of updates since the device was first released, so I suspect Roland is on top of it.

Re: Lavs for no shirt - weightloss tv show

Another DPA to consider is the tiny 4097 "shotgun," which is a dream to conceal on set. Fabulous DPA sound, smooth transition to off-axis. Not super expensive, either. Not sure if it meets your needs, but it can be very, very useful.

Re: Article idea: where's the money?

Back in 2006 I looked into this in a bit of detail. At the time, the entire North American music industry (recording, performance, online, ringtones, games) earned about $12 billion annually. The piano teaching "industry," on the other hand, earned closer to $15 billion (in North America),...

Re: Article idea: where's the money?

All fair observations, but that's only the "music performance" side of things. Historically, that's not where the money has been, except for a lucky few. And recording is the moody teenager in this scenario. What about music education (all angles), or the music products industry? Teaching ...

Article idea: where's the money?

Looking at a few topics lately, such as "Is there really any point making music to sell anymore," got me thinking about an old issue of Mix magazine that I dig through every few years. In May 2006, the cover/feature was "Where's The Money." The times have changed (more mobile pho...

Re: How to record bicycle rides with minimum wind noise?

After some experiments, I've found decent results with a pair of tiny Omni mics inside a time trial helmet (with visor). These are specifically made to get through the air a cleanly as possible (with matching skin suit, aero bike etc). Placement of the mics out of any turbulence is critical, as is t...

Re: Demos, live recordings, video. 8-12 multitracks. Preferably battery powered. Cheap!

I picked up a Zoom H8 a few weeks ago, and it's great. Good preamps, works as a 12-in/2-out USB interface, great battery life. The Zoom mic capsules are good for the price, and the included XY module has a 1/8 stereo input, so 8-channel recording out of the box. Two of the XLRs are combi jacks, so y...

Re: Somewhat Odd Descriptions/names

Do you have to call them anything at all? Perhaps just show the shapes.

Plus that's good for users in all languages, no translation needed!

Re: How to record bicycle rides with minimum wind noise?

Hey Dan, thank you for this input, I'll look into it. Since I was planning to buy the Roland CS 10EM anyway do you think I could do the same with these mics? Also, do you know if it's possible to connect these 3.5mm stereo mics into the Tascam dr-40 that has two mono xlr-1/4 inputs? I would need to...

Re: stereo recording live performance techniques

Just a thought: if Ambisonic is of interest, you could look at the Zoom H3-VR recorder. Bass frequencies shouldn't matter much in your situation, so you might like the results. And they're certainly affordable at the moment, at around $250 USD. Then import the files to your platform of choice and en...

Re: Yoshimi V 2.0 is here :)

Looks good on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (w/ Ubuntu Studio pkg) using Opera or Firefox. Can't wait to dig in to 2.0! One problem I've had with Yoshimi is that it displays as a tiny little window on my laptop screen (Lenovo P52s, 15" 4k screen). Readable with a magnifying glass, but less than ideal ;) I b...

Re: LDCs or SDCs for classical/choral works

Any particular reason it has to be those mics? Have a think about two Line Audio CM4s in DIN or NOS configuration, flanked by two Line Audio OM1s. Spacing between the OM1s is 66cm. Blend to taste... I completely agree with Mike: excellent mics, and they are very unlikely to be the downfall of your ...

Re: Linux on a USB stick

I've been using Ubuntu exclusively for a few years, having spent almost 30 on Mac. The transition has been pretty good, and the tools are excellent. There are a few plugins that I used to use that are no longer options (Melodyne, Speakerphone), but I've learned to adapt my thinking to get the best o...

Re: Help me make it better - mix & mastering a choral work

Thanks for sharing the recordings, George! I feel that you got a nice recording of some good performances. On headphones, they present well, although I'm left with the feeling that the mics were a bit too close to everyone (not much you can do about that!). (No access to speakers here, as my family ...

Korg modwave wavetable synth

Whilst poking around on the internet tonight, i came across a listing at Long & McQuade (Canada) for an upcoming Korg modwave wavetable synth. Same 37-key format as Wavestate and OpSix. Still no aftertouch, but responds to poly aftertouch (as do the others). And it looks as though you can load y...

Re: Taming/Reducing Excessive Vocalist Vibrato on Tracks

Welcome! It sounds as though this would be fixable with Melodyne, although I don't know whether the latest version will run on your system (I've moved on to Linux, so can't check). I'm running Ubuntu 20.04 LTS with the full Ubuntu Studio package. For audio, it includes loads of fantastic software, such as Ardour, Yoshimi, the full Calf Audio plugin suite, and heaps of others. Thanks for the heads up about this! I'm very interested to hear what progress is being made with Pipewire. At some point it'll probably replace Jack and Pulse audio. How close are we? Re: Sensible monitor upgrade from Mackie Hr824??

If you're considering the KH310, you might also want to look at the Genelec 8341 (The Ones), which got a glowing review from KH310 owner Hugh. Similar price here in Canada. They're seriously good, especially for long sessions. 8331 w/sub is also a nice option, if you're monitoring at close proximity...
