Re: How to increase depth of field SOS article

The article later one mentions trying 'oeksound soothe' with this reverb technique. Soothe seems to get mentioned often so I downloaded a trial but I'm not sure what its doing, whether its an equalizer or compressor. I'll go and look for some online tutorials, just wondering if anyone here uses it ...

Re: Production advice

I thought this was great, congratulations Drew Stephenson! I'm not sure it isn't finished and fine as is. I really liked the outro and intro parts and I wasn't expecting the spoken word at all. For suggestions, I was thinking about maybe strings high or low or perhaps an ebow guitar part during the ...

Re: How to increase depth of field SOS article

Wow! Now its working it is really quite a special thing, obvious to me now I hadn't understood the concept of send and receives at all. Much to explore for me with this depth of field idea/technique, I've always been after making it sound like my recordings in a 'real' space, this seems to help with ...

Re: How to increase depth of field SOS article

'where do I send the return too? Keep it at the default (which should be the master track) to start with.' I've opened the I/O box in reaper and sent the track. For example, track 5 is a guitar part it's there again now in a new reaper stereo track AMBA track 9 with seventh heaven. In track 9 both ...

Re: How to increase depth of field SOS article

So far so good, I've managed to set up 3 stereo tracks with 3 different room reverbs similar to the ones mentioned in the article. I've pressed on I/O button in Reaper and its opened up routing for the track. I've sent a guitar part to AMBA the reverb nearest the wall, where do I send the return too ...

Re: How to increase depth of field SOS article

Wonderful helpful stuff many thanks to you all, I'm really looking forward to trying it out. I'll start tonight and see how I go. The good thing about the hard copy magazine is I've read almost everything in it, with the tablet version I tend to skim through and miss much. Not sure I would have ...

How to increase depth of field SOS article

I enjoyed reading a paper copy of this months magazine on a long train trip. Much better than the online replica reading experience in many ways. There is a very interesting article 'How to increase depth of field' and I'd like to follow its guidelines. Alas as ever, my ambition is thwarted by my ...

Re: Snake Oil

I'm a little surprised by the negative response about cables, and whilst I can't explain how it might work at all but I did have one relevant experience with silver interconnects once. At the height of my hifi phase about 30 years ago I was at a dealer listening to some valve amplifiers. He had a ...

Re: Another Mic Comparison

Not very many benefits to being laid low with some nasty virus and isolating at home, but I have managed to listen to these recordings, so all is not lost. I find the ones I like the best seem to stand out fairly clearly but I have no idea what the mic brand or type they might be. The vocal I like 2 ...

Re: Am I missing a trick with any part of this kit list?

I agree with James Perrett, the mic seems to make all the difference with me, the preamp not so much. I was aware of U87 being the go to all purpose mic, but went for a secondhand Lewitt 1040 as it has plenty of options for recording vocalists of all kinds. Haven't regretted it at all, it's wonderful.

Re: Baby's first synth...

This is a road/minefield I've been down, I was after a small footprint synth suitable for beginner. I tried soft synths that came with my arturia midi keyboard but that didn't really take. Next I tried a Novation mininova and then a Korg Micrologue, both lovely but neither have been kept. I went for ...

Soundtoys do bargain offers occasionally Arpangel I think at Easter time, and they offer a 30 day trial, so you could have a free look to see what you make of it. The complete bundle is $499 currently but I'm sure I got it for 99 or 199 a few years back on sale. The complete bundle is pretty ...

Re: Struggling with acoustic guitar recordings – need feedback please!

I like having 2 mics for an acoustic as outlined by Drew, one at the 12 fret and one at the lower bout. I must have read it somewhere that to account for phase issues you multiply by a third. So if your mic's are both 8 inches away from the guitar one at the 12th fret and the other below the bridge ...

Re: mid/side mic question

Thanks HughRobjohns, I spent most of the Christmas break reading the RME handbook and watching endless total mix videos, if next, I was then found walking around a mic counting out numbers it might be a bridge too far for my nearest and dearest! I've taken the advice, I had been setting the side ...

Re: mid/side mic question

Thanks Matt, I will be working in stereo, what I meant was a single guitar and a voice would be right in the centre of the soundstage so its like mono in that sense of seemingly coming from a single point in space. I'm making progress bit by bit and these answers are helping a great deal. My reslo ...

Re: mid/side mic question

Thanks for all the great tips, I was recording it separately as I thought it would allow me more options. The vocal is straight cardioid and then the single guitar part mid/side. I'll download the voxengo and try that as its shown in the article I read. 'leaving a rather phasey result with a hole in ...

mid/side mic question

I'm recording my acoustic mid/side but I'm a little puzzled with the results. I'm using my 818 in cardioid as the centre and my reslo ribbon as figure of 8 set at 90 degrees. They are one on top of the other and after recording I'm duplicating a reslo track and flipping the polarity. I'm then ...
