Re: Headphones, planar vs alternatives etc.

This amateur mixer (not master-er) uses exclusively headphones to mix, though I have decent (bookshelf) speakers to check mixes on, as well as plugins to check for things I cannot hear. I think others who use mostly headphones will agree that the most difficult piece of mixing on headphones is low ...

Re: RX elements

I use Dialogue Enhance 2 from Accentize which has noise reduction, dynamic control, spectral EQ, and gain control in one (relatively) economical plugin; including automatic modes for the latter three. However, I understand here the OP (or thread discussion) was also looking for 'room removal,' which ...

Re: Open and Closed Backed Headphones

Monoprice in the US, with one of their early planar models (M560 from 2016?), had exactly this configuration, using small wooden discs which, when magnetically attached, would "close" the open earcups. I might still have a pair stashed in my garage...

"Masters of the Art of Mixing" (August 2024 SOS article)

Hello, I'm a little disappointed that the online resources cited in this article from the newest SOS issue do *NOT* appear to me to be available until September 2024. I've registered, freely, at "Modern Metal Mixing," according to that website, technically a "waitlist" - while being given access to ...

Re: Slowing A Track In Izotope

You can do it with IZotope in a very crude way. (Maybe those time and pitch options will also work, but I’ve never used them. According to the documentation, they should do want you want). Anyway, the crude method. Assuming your file is at 44.1KHz convert it to 48KHz using resample. Then use r ...

Re: Hire a local (bay area) or remote/online mixing engineer?

This novice mixer has a few suggestions: When you get closer to making a decision, you can also choose two mixers, either to observe/participate and/or of course one could be remote. Can then compare/contrast their work. In the Bay Area there are lots of choices, I'd certainly consider this one ...

Re: Power trio and stereo

This newbie (having never recorded a power trio as such!) would wonder about combining the half-pan idea above with 'sending' the reverb to the opposite side. So, if the guitar ends up panned L40, pan its reverb to R40.

Re: AYAIC Mix Monolith & Soothe2

This relative newbie's advice for Mix Monolith: You'd have to willing to set up a template to use it, it requires an instance on every track and bus so to add that to a project every time would defeat what I would think is one purpose: to make gain staging easier. I picked it up on sale a year ago ...

Re: Plugin to ride volume in long podcast edits

I have not used it exactly in the OP's scenario, but another (dearer) possibility could be something like Sound Radix' POWAIR, which is like Vocal Rider on steroids - tweakable compression, sidechain, etc. etc.

Re: Top-Down Mixing with Abbey Road TG Mastering Chain - Bad Habit?

Re: reverb on the 2 bus: Andrew Scheps has been known to use (a small bit of!) reverb here *instead of* a compressor for glue. Eg. Tverb (room emulation) at around 15% wet. Re: Second pair of ears please?

FWIW, the second version was better, listening on an average computer monitor external speaker. First version had more rumble, and as previously commented, vocals seemed to not be sitting comfortably.
One line vibe: a mellow Warren Zevon. (That is meant to be a compliment from this newbie!)
