Re: The Behringer Keyboards 'n' Stuff Thread #3

The softsynth isn't really at all exciting, but Behringer did promise a unified free DAW a few years back and it seems like an obvious first step on fulfilling yet another long-term promise, which bodes well for other long term projects (cough VCS cough). What's actually interesting is that not only...

Re: The Behringer Keyboards 'n' Stuff Thread #3

Yeah the license page still isn't working, I assume they got slammed by license requests and it took down the license generation server and rather than bring it back up immediately they're trying to figure out how to deal with the server load. I am curious to find out if it expects you to set up a n...

Re: The Behringer Keyboards 'n' Stuff Thread #3

Behringer has released their first VST plugin, 'Vintage'. Predictably, it's a vintage synth emulation, but not any specific vintage synth. It's also totally free (with a registration which is, at the moment, down). https://plugins.musictribe.com/behringer/0723-AAD Interface looks pretty good, apprec...

Re: Vintage Synth Roland JV-80 Patches & Sys-Ex Files

I picked up a JV-880 very cheap last month, some previous owner had put a US-style plug on a 230v unit so if you didn't notice the 230v mark on the rear and plugged it in to the wall, it wouldn't start due to being under-volted. Step up transformers are pretty cheap. I'm going to get on the waiting ...

Re: Akai MPC Key 37

It does look pretty good, I like that the design harkens back to the rare VX-600 synth from the 80s (and the unreleased X3700 sampler). I'm not a huge fan of having to buy plugins on top of buying the hardware, but I'm kind of old fashioned about that. As far as the price goes, I would be surprised ...

Re: Korg OPSIX etc now MKII and as modules

So the new versions appear to use a newer version of the RPi Compute Module that the first versions used, so they bumped up the voices. Frustratingly the Opsix is still monotimbral, so you get 64 voices of the same thing. Racking them is also a bit weird because the outputs are still on the rear, wh...

Also endorsing Firefox + uBlock Origin for daily use. With google clamping down on Chrome Adblock and literally every other browser being built on Chrome, Firefox is the only browser left that will allow useful adblock functionality going forward.

So is this going to be our thread for the 2024 Korg takeover of NAMM? New Opsix mkII https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZV0yDqnwD3o All 3 of Modwave, Wavestate and Opsix are getting desktop/rack cases along with software updates for MIDI 2.0, including Poly-AT (but notably not on the keybed, only exter...

They announce 'release' when they load up the shipping containers as far as I can tell.

Given what's going on in the Red Sea, it may be a while.

Re: Synth Gear Advice

At this point, I would never recommend anyone buy a Juno-106 or an SH-101, because both have far more reliable and far less expensive modern alternatives with better features. I've also never personally clicked with either of them, but if you're after the sound of that period in Roland kit, Behringe...

Re: Suggestions for Synth/Groovebox for house, techno, acid & trance.

I have a Donner B1 and it’s hands down the best sequencer on a bass synth I’ve ever played with, just tons of immediate fun. Last week it was on sale thru Amazon for $80.

Re: Weighted / semi-weighted Mini-Keyboard ? Is It A Thing ?

I don’t know that there are any 5 octave mini key boards at all. Maybe something from the 90s? ASM doesn’t make any 5 octave keyboards, even their full size synths are 4 and 6 octaves. E: I see Korg does one. Since they licensed PolyTouch from ASM for their new controller range I guess it’s possible...

Re: Weighted / semi-weighted Mini-Keyboard ? Is It A Thing ?

Not weighted as such, but a much better key action due to designing the key bed in-house: Hydrasynth Explorer. The polyphonic aftertouch required them to create a very good keybed and it’s easily the best mini keys I’ve ever played.

Re: Stand prices

I noticed this several years ago, long before COVID caused so many price fluctuations and shipping issues. I also learned that spending more doesn't necessarily get you a better product when it comes to stands, and that A-frame stands with plastic bits are less useful than a used 20 year old generic...

Re: Imposcar hardware controller

That was £898, more than 10 years ago. Does Imposcar 2 still run on current versions of Windows and current Macs? The problem with hardware VST controllers is that they're boutique and therefore small production run and therefore expensive, and the software will inevitably become unusable on upgrade...

Re: Yamaha Montage M - New Montage series with AN-X VA engine and Poly-AT (but only on the biggest one)

Huh, so that might mean that it actually is an in-house development? It's not like polyphonic aftertouch is a new tech that companies have to figure out how to implement, it's just expensive to develop and test for reliability - nobody wants to run into the problems Ensoniq had.

Yamaha Montage M - New Montage series with AN-X VA engine and Poly-AT (but only on the biggest one)

The most recent Montage series was retired over the summer, but Yamaha appears to still see some life in the workstation market. They have also apparently heard from enough people asking for a new CS-80 to take a stab at it. https://yamahamusicians.com/yamaha-montage-m-specifications-and-pricing/ Ya...

Re: Korg Keystage 49 & 61 MIDI 2.0 MPE Poly-AT controllers - ASM licensed

The risk I see with MIDI-2 is that manufacturers and software houses are likely to pair up to effectively create walled gardens simply by not releasing the full details of their protocol, so those outside only get the fallback state of MIDI-1. I was unfortunately the victim of this sort of thing ev...
