Re: Input Gain Scale?
Yes. The metering. So it's actually scaled in dBFS -- decibels relative to full scale. Full scale being the maximum quantization level. 0dBFS is the loudest possible, and anything quieter is a negative number. In the analogue world one common reference level was 0VU, and you could work with both ...

Re: Input Gain Scale?
... what is the measurement on my recorder? Are you talking about the calibrations on the metering, or markings around an actual input level control? Either way, you might find this article helpful: https://www.soundonsound.com/techniques/gain-staging-your-daw-software To answer one question, yes ...

Re: Input Gain Scale?
It's 0dBfs, on an analogue system 0dB relates to a specific signal strength but analogue systems can go beyond this, usually considerably, but with increasing levels of distortion. In a digital system there is a hard ceiling, i.e. when all the bits in the word representing the sample are set to 1 ...

Input Gain Scale?
Hiya all, So today got me thinking about what’s probably a silly question; but what is the measurement on my recorder? It’s goes from: -50, -30, -20, -12, -6, 0 I know it’s the Input Gain Level, but is it measure in Decibels (DB)?? I’m trying to understand why it’s a negative numbered level? Is it so ...

Re: WAV. Bit/sample & rendering to MP3?
One thing to consider is that, if there is a chance that these would be used for research purposes, there is a case to be made for recording at a high sample rate to capture the high frequency sounds that the birds may use but that we can't hear. It would certainly be worth looking at your 96kHz ...

Re: WAV. Bit/sample & rendering to MP3?
A sometime nature/bird recorder here... Hugh's covered the technical stuff so I'll limit this to personal experience and observations... I record at 24-bit, 44.1 making sure I leave plenty of headroom... these little critters can be unexpectedly noisy at times. If you're at all serious about this ...

Re: WAV. Bit/sample & rendering to MP3?
Last point first, standard fixed-point 24 or 16 bit WAV files are broadly the equivalent of Tiff image files. Floating-point audio files are the rough equivalent of camera RAW image files. And, yes, mp3s are akin to Jpegs and suffer equivalent artefacts and degradations. My preference, in your ...

WAV. Bit/sample & rendering to MP3?
Evening all, hoping you can help me. I have been using my portable recorder to record bird song but up to now have been recording in the highest WAV format available and that’s that. However I now want to start refining my recordings by actually putting them through a daw and do light processing l ...

Re: Usable Audio/Music files?
If you're aiming to make any money from your videos, do check on the small print though, as I suspect even 'Royalty-free' music may sometimes only be usable for non-profit making ventures. Martin Hello Martin, thank you for the tip! For me it won’t be for money making, however it’s definitely som ...

Re: Usable Audio/Music files?
Depending on where you're planning on hosting your video, Youtube have a pretty good collection of royalty free tracks. I suspect there are sites that specialise in this stuff though, I think we've had a discussion about this before on here. Try a search for 'royalty free music' and that should get ...

Curtis is one of the best... you won't go far wrong following him - as well as the esteemed writers of SOS of course! Yeah I have watched many of his videos already and completed his Zoom F6 course. Re: Mixing track and Faders
The clue is in the names. Gain knobs are for adjusting preamp gain to optimise the signal level through the signal and/or for recording. Faders are for mixing. At their unity or 0dB position they don't alter the signal level at all, so that is the default position. The scaling or law of the fader ...

Re: Mixing track and Faders
Yes, the F6's limited mixing facility could cause the confusion. It would be safest to ignore it for now until you are comfortable with using the basic recording features. Ah brilliant! Thank you James for your help in clearing that up for me! Again apologies for the confusion aha, but I'm glad its ...

Re: Mixing track and Faders
I think you are possibly confusing two separate stages of the process. 1) applies to recording while 2) applies to mixing. 2) also mainly applies if you are using a conventional mixing desk or software that emulates the way that a mixing desk works. If your recorder or software doesn't work in that ...

Mixing track and Faders
Evening all - I have been reading quite a few different things regarding two different ways that people mix tracks, whether it be via a field recorder/mixer (like my F6) or via a studio mixing deck. 1) This is the way I have understood from learning the last week, to be the most efficient way ...

Re: Thank you & Gain Trim / Fader levels for Wildlife/Birds/Nature
It‘s a good idea to record quiet sounds at lower levels, very quiet sounds down to -40dB. This leaves enough headroom for dealing with a soft wind or insects flying close to the mic. It also makes sure that the sound character stays true in relation to the overall sound spectrum. Loud=loud, quiet=q ...

Re: Brand New to Post Audio Production
Very sensible advice from Drew - get to know your gear first before moving on to anything else. And I'd echo the Reaper suggestion - I've been using it for 12 years or more and I still feel that I'm just scratching the surface of its power. Thank you James, reaper really does seem they way to go ...
