Re: Plugins of choice : Mastering, Channel strip, Voice, Instrument, Analyzers and Esoteric.

Rea EQ - Seems to do what its supposed too. Am I missing out with the Fab Q Soothe 2 by Oeksound - Dynamic EQ, I like this on acoustic or anything harsh. Surprised no one is using this? SSL channel strip - I just use the compressor normally. My only other compressor is Reacomp and I don't like it. I ...

Re: Small portable 2 track recorder

Thanks for all the info. Im looking pretty hard at the F3. Seems perfect for what I need I was bit skeptical on how well the dual A/D converters would work, but it seems flawless (according to everyone here) and the reviews I've read online. I imagine the tricky part is for the circuitry and ...

Re: Small portable 2 track recorder

Thanks James for clearing up the input gain settings. I am just not familiar with this dual A/D converters, but your explanation makes sense, and I trust your judgement.
I saw that the F3 has better noise specs on the preamps. I think I may go with this one

Small portable 2 track recorder

Im looking at these mobile recorders to have something I can carry and record two guitars with external SDC's. Also I want to use this to record choral performances with a pair of external SDC's. Something I can carry to make recordings so I don't need to carry my laptop and interface around. I like ...

Re: Share your experience upgrading to more expensive monitors..

I use a single avantone mixcube. If I can get my mixes sounding good through this, they usually sound pretty good through everything else. Also use the AKG702 headphones, which I find the biggest problem is getting the vocal level right. Getting the vox and midrange right is easiest through the ...

Re: Artist mix to Reference Alison Krauss song?

Hartford used a lot of open tunings and heavier than normal strings to help get the banjo tone, according to what I just read. Listen to the intro of streetcar. Thats the sweetest tone I've heard from a banjo

Re: Artist mix to Reference Alison Krauss song?

Drew - good observation. I am amazed at his tone and timing as well. Its certainly not the jack hammer style banjo we hear in traditional bluegrass. Ive read that his playing influenced the newgrass scene in the 70's

Re: Artist mix to Reference Alison Krauss song?

There is something different about John Hartford's banjo style. I dont play banjo or understand the nuances but when I first heard Morning Bugle, I could tell that this banjo playing is quite a bit more laid back than what I'm used to hearing, especially in traditional bluegrass. The "sound" of that ...

Re: Artist mix to Reference Alison Krauss song?

Molly Tuttle version is good, thanks for sharing. She is a monster on guitar. I've played (guitar) and sang this one a few times. The chord progression is fun to play, but I never could get the vocal quite right. We had pretty good banjo player in the band and he would tear it up, which really made ...

Here is a link to my fav version of this song. I think the banjo sits nice in this mix and the playing is as tasteful as you can get.

Re: How much highs before mastering

Ive tried the algorithmic mastering just for the experience. I've only kept one mix I ran through this...the others were not good. Better off to get your mixes right by listening through a familiar monitoring system and using references. Sometimes a service like this is just compressing and limiting ...

I like the formant and spoken word on this one. Keeps it interesting and the message of the tune is clear.

Re: Brittle Recording - Feedback and Help Request

Not exactly. I mean the difference in volume of your vowel sounds compared to the consonants.

A vowel is a speech sound made with your mouth fairly open, the nucleus of a spoken syllable. A consonant is a sound made with your mouth fairly closed.

Re: Brittle Recording - Feedback and Help Request

whisper (this would have no edge) a few sentences and see if you notice how the consonants are the loudest part and stick out more. Then, holler out like your calling across the yard to your brother. the consonants should be less loud compared to the rest of the word(s)

Re: Brittle Recording - Feedback and Help Request

I think the recordings are an accurate representation of your voice. Instead of using a different mic or interface, you might look at your vocal and mic technique to get a better recording. I don't hear a clearly defined edge to vocal, and I think this makes the consonants stand out more. That's the ...

Re: Brittle Recording - Feedback and Help Request

I thought the SM7b was less brittle than the others. Try experimenting with distance from the mic and the timbre of your voice. The meat of the voice doesn't have enough edge, so the edges are forced to the consonances and they stand out more. That's what I think I'm hearing

Nice, I have the LTC 540s

The 540 can be bright, I sometimes use the wind foam to calm it down a bit

Re: ideas for a new mic for elec guitats

I have used a WA 14 on guitar cab, thought it did pretty well with this. At the same time, I struggled with getting enough level on quieter sources, or when any distance was between the mic and source. I am going to try the SE 4400 next. Since this mic has higher output, I will just use the pads on ...

Re: LDC mics and preamp question

Hugh - The company got back to me and said the sensitivity of this mic is 6mV/PA. By far, the least sensitive mic I own. Re: LDC mics and preamp question

Room noise may be part of the problem but I can get crystal clear recordings from other mics with all other factors being equal. Even less expensive ones. Re: LDC mics and preamp question

Thanks everyone. I've tried this mic in different rooms including a well treated room. Works pretty good for up close applications. Moving further away (even 20 inches) for acoustic guitar, just not working very well, and its all boiling down to not enough output from the mic. Not too happy with the ...
