Re: Share your experience upgrading to more expensive monitors..
I use a single avantone mixcube. If I can get my mixes sounding good through this, they usually sound pretty good through everything else. Also use the AKG702 headphones, which I find the biggest problem is getting the vocal level right. Getting the vox and midrange right is easiest through the Avan...

Re: Artist mix to Reference Alison Krauss song?
Hartford used a lot of open tunings and heavier than normal strings to help get the banjo tone, according to what I just read. Listen to the intro of streetcar. Thats the sweetest tone I've heard from a banjo

Re: Artist mix to Reference Alison Krauss song?
Drew - good observation. I am amazed at his tone and timing as well. Its certainly not the jack hammer style banjo we hear in traditional bluegrass. Ive read that his playing influenced the newgrass scene in the 70's

Re: Artist mix to Reference Alison Krauss song?
There is something different about John Hartford's banjo style. I dont play banjo or understand the nuances but when I first heard Morning Bugle, I could tell that this banjo playing is quite a bit more laid back than what I'm used to hearing, especially in traditional bluegrass. The "sound&quo...

Re: Artist mix to Reference Alison Krauss song?
Molly Tuttle version is good, thanks for sharing. She is a monster on guitar. I've played (guitar) and sang this one a few times. The chord progression is fun to play, but I never could get the vocal quite right. We had pretty good banjo player in the band and he would tear it up, which really made ...

Re: Artist mix to Reference Alison Krauss song?
Here is a link to my fav version of this song. I think the banjo sits nice in this mix and the playing is as tasteful as you can get.

Re: How much highs before mastering
Ive tried the algorithmic mastering just for the experience. I've only kept one mix I ran through this...the others were not good. Better off to get your mixes right by listening through a familiar monitoring system and using references. Sometimes a service like this is just compressing and limiting...

Re: Opinions on vocal change - female to Male
I like the formant and spoken word on this one. Keeps it interesting and the message of the tune is clear.

Re: Brittle Recording - Feedback and Help Request
Not exactly. I mean the difference in volume of your vowel sounds compared to the consonants.
A vowel is a speech sound made with your mouth fairly open, the nucleus of a spoken syllable. A consonant is a sound made with your mouth fairly closed.

Re: Brittle Recording - Feedback and Help Request
whisper (this would have no edge) a few sentences and see if you notice how the consonants are the loudest part and stick out more. Then, holler out like your calling across the yard to your brother. the consonants should be less loud compared to the rest of the word(s)

Re: Brittle Recording - Feedback and Help Request
I think the recordings are an accurate representation of your voice. Instead of using a different mic or interface, you might look at your vocal and mic technique to get a better recording. I don't hear a clearly defined edge to vocal, and I think this makes the consonants stand out more. That's the...
