You "play" the pads with MIDI notes, not channels. Use only one MIDI track.
The pads on GA should be displaying the note they respond to.

Speaking as a Cubase user, it's my understanding that Live is notorious for its lack of pdc.
You should try posting in a dedicated Live forum.
Most solutions I've seen are mostly of the workaround variety, usually unsatisfactory.
Hopefully some Live users here will chip in.
