Re: TB/USB-C adapters/dock etc for new Mac M4?

I think Presonus did some USB3 interfaces but I have a vague recollection their latest ones may have gone back to USB2? There was something in the magazine a month or two ago. EDIT - Hmm. May be misremembering. They're certainly no longer doing Thunderbolt interfaces (see April's mag) but I not sure ...

Half Ton studios fella, does lots of articles for the mag, Neil? Nigel?
He's based in Cambridge and according to his website has a nice selection of mics.

Fast attack, fast release compressor with a low threshold so it just takes off the transient and then lets the note build?

Re: Is there a way to objectively measure dither afterwards?

When I still had hearing up to 14.5k (pre-covid) I did try some different dithers when I was first reading up about it. I could never reliably hear the difference between dither and no dither, let alone different types of dither. Now I've lost another k off the top I think there's even less ...

pp-piano wrote: Wed Apr 23, 2025 3:19 pm But I've decided to actually get better at recording/peformance for now, and gonna try get the best results I can out of the M201s.

This the way. Performance beats technical wizardry, and learning how best to use and position your mics will beat spending more to improve on the M201s.

Re: Recording Upright Piano: Mic recommendations

Sam Inglis shared a thing a while back that was basically the same thing in reverse; if you've got a acoustic track that's sounding a little flat then adding some artificial early reflections can add a bit of sparkle back in.

Tomás Mulcahy wrote: Tue Apr 22, 2025 1:36 pmBack then I had Tandy PZMs which are very decent, but not a smooth/ flat as the Crowns.

I used to use a pair of them inside the piano (one against each side wall) for an open mic night. Worked surprisingly well. :)

Worth having a look at Mike Senior's library of mic positions as well: https://cambridge-mt.com/rs2/lmp/
(Scroll down for the piano stuff).

Re: Dongleless iLok Question

Assuming that you're only working on one at a time, this is what iLok Cloud should allow you to do. Install on all 6 machines, sign in and sign out when you're using a machine to activate.
How well it actually works I don't know...

We are very good at spending other people's money here aren't we?
Let's try and find an amp in budget first before we go to recommending buying another guitar as well. :D

Re: Mounting a keyboard on the edge of a shelf

I've thought about one a few times but I generally find it quicker (and accurate enough for my purposes) to grab a chunk of timber and a saw. :)

Re: Looking for volunteers to run this tech demo -- help/feedback needed!

Ah, gotcha. That makes sense.
You could sort of replicate it in a daw then by loading all four files in and then manually dragging the start times back each time (using a modifier to keep them off grid).

Re: Looking for volunteers to run this tech demo -- help/feedback needed!

Interesting piece and concept. But is there any reason not to just mix a stereo file with four point sources of the content? Two hard panned and two at 30 degrees either side? Listening to a file like that on headphones would give a very similar effect wouldn't it?

Don't see why not? Not an area I'm familiar with. If you were going that route you could refine some of the design to eliminate stress points and make installation a bit easier as well.

Re: Mounting a keyboard on the edge of a shelf

Unless you're going to screw into the desk I wouldn't be trusting that. Personally, if this was my desk, I'd create a similar set of holding brackets, but ones that hooked over the rear of the shelf. I'll knock up a quick pic. Summat like this: https://i.imgur.com/g52FlWQ.jpeg The weight of the ...

Re: How much does it cost to obtain a license to release a cover version of an existing composition?

Guess what? It's quite complicated! If your target is just streaming via the majors (Spotify/YouTube*/apple) etc, and the tune is originally from a major publisher, then it may be covered by their blanket licence. If it's for a physical product or permanent download then you'll need a mechanical ...

Even for less-than-mastering scenarios, I've been surprised at how much I'm missing my sub whilst it's on repair.
