2 is a better balance between violin and piano, but sounds like the mic was in a box! 1 is the higher quality recording.
But it doesn't really matter. Because the violinist is going to listen to either of them and say 'God! Was I playing THAT much out of tune?' and refuse to let you submit either.

Re: How to read Pitch of Staccato Notes
I am suprised. The way you talk I get the impression that you can hear a short note and can tell the pitch? Like this is an A3 -4 cents? Thats incredible to me. Can you tell what frequency any given sound is when you hear it? If a note has a discernable pitch, it doesn't matter how long ...

Re: How to read Pitch of Staccato Notes
I am not trained to hear if a note is in pitch or not. Well, with all respect, that's your main problem then! Knowing when something sounds right is perhaps the most vital prerequisite for doing anything in music production! But I'm sure you're being too hard on yourself. Listen to some of the ...

Re: How to read Pitch of Staccato Notes
Any ideas on how to get a good read on the pitch of single staccato notes? Oh, for goodness's sake! Has the MUSIC element been completely lost from 'Music Technology'? LISTEN to the note. If it sounds 'off', tweak it until it isn't! Even if you do get a clear read-out from some analysis program, it ...

Re: Recording Pipe Organ
There is a lo-cut setting on your Zoom h4n, in the Input menu. I don't think it's turned on by default, but it's worth checking. The classic mic position for pipe organ is up high, in front of the pipes. This may not be practical, but at least try to get it up and out of any location that could be ...

Re: BBC R3 Carol competition 2023
Yes. Apart from the uninspiring lyric, they seem heavily biased against anything but the most amateur dilettante and the most superficial musical content. And if you do manage to slip a catchy melody past the rules, they'll 'arrange' it out of all recognition.

Re: Cassette tapes to add character
If you do decide to degrade your product through a domestic cassette machine, be sure to advertise clearly that you've done it, so that a certain generation can add nostalgia points. Otherwise everyone will just assume it's a crap recording.

Re: How to record?
OK. So your first requirement is a musical jot-pad. Maybe the voice recorder on your phone. Or there's always those 5 lines on a sheet of paper plus a pencil!

Re: Does the MIDI input on an AI have the same buffer size and latency as the audio input?
Audio needs to be digitised, which involves buffering and hence delay. But this isn't the figure we're generally interested in when speaking of 'audio latency'. Rather the overall time taken to digitise the input audio, crunch it through the DAW's audio engine, maybe adding some effects, then send ...

Re: Two mics one input
Argue about mics and speakers if you like. They're all horribly imperfect, just in different ways - make your choice. But we've sussed amplifiers. Vastly expensive overkill really isn't necessary.

Re: Is my singing good enough for live performances?
I'm not even going to listen to your tracks. A musician wants you to sing his songs. Assuming there's no payment involved (you to him) what are you arguing about? Give it a try. Have fun!

Unfortunately, we're hearing just as much whiny bollocks from the other viewpoint. Without re-hashing all the arguments, let me just say that statements that kick off with 'Computers will never...' are invariably proved wrong. I expect there will continue to be a market for 'artisan music', just as ...

Re: Tax - what expenses can I claim?
It's actually much more straightforward than you imagine. You write down how much money you received. You write down how much you had to spend to enable you to earn that money. Just one figure goes on your tax form, the difference between the two. If you are investigated, you need to be able to show ...

I refer you to my signature below :-) The trick is to kid yourself that the world DOES need your music, someone's been foolish enough to commission a song (for MONEY!) and there's a deadline. Re: Standing monitors on their sides
wasn't the NS10 designed as a home Hifi listening monitor - which is why all the studios went for them in such a big way? The story goes that they were designed as hi-fi bookshelf speakers but failed in that market, presumably because of their (over-) analytical sound and fatiguing upper-mid range ...

Re: Melodyne timing vocals
I'm afraid any attempt to correct either pitch or position in Melodyne mechanically is going to run into problems, particularly when working on vocals. The detected 'start point' and central frequency MAY be the ones we hear, but very often they aren't! There's still a place for operator skill ...

Re: need critique on this mix-constantly disappointed with mixes now
Did you intend the 'piano' and pad at the beginning to be (sometimes) out of synch? I'm afraid it just sounds sloppy to me. I like the slightly asymmetric rhythm from 0'33". But then you lose me. I'm not hearing much of interest, either musically or sonically. Sorry. Maybe it's just not my style.

Re: Why do we need sound systems?
Early Bono and full-throttle Adele might just make it work in an unamplified concert hall but Billie Eilish and Gentle Folkie Types would start a shooshing war.
