Re: The Eclectics

A 'bit' too far for me I'm afraid - especially at that time :(

Re: MIDI Expression CC11 - a lesson for instrument designers

I think part of the problem is that the MIDI spec doesn't define exactly what they mean by 'expression'. From time to time I've MIDI-learned it to perform a combination of filter cutoff, and reduced volume range on brass sounds.

Re: How Can I Switch The Voltage On ALTO TS415 Speaker From 120 Volts To 240 Volts?

I'm grateful for the discussion. I guess sometimes getting no solution from others really is the catalyst you need to learn more about a subject matter and create a solution for yourself. You were right to persist carefully, but you still got lucky. That voltage calculation I gave is correct, for a...

Re: MIDI Expression CC11 - a lesson for instrument designers

The default functions are fine. Any half decent softsynth should be able to re-assign them if it wants to, with nothing in the middle interfering. Also, zipper noise? These days, are there really synths that are so poorly designed, with processors so under-spec they can't handle interpolation? As th...

Re: MIDI Expression CC11 - a lesson for instrument designers

Interesting. I just dived into the Yoshimi code (here be dragons) and it seems we get it wrong-ish. The individual part insertion effects are applied before expression, but the system effects are applied afterwards. However... You can MIDI-learn the incoming expression value, route it wherever you l...

I just use Yoshimi's built in reverbs - good enough for me.

Re: To Dither Or Not To Dither?

Going from float to 24bit would any artifacts actually be audible? Generally, or just without dither? It largely depends on the specific material. In most cases id say probably not, but fades can often expose quantizing distortions. However, correct dithering is so easy to do, why wouldn't you? Wel...

Here we go :)
Some of you may have heard slightly different versions of about half of these before, and there are a couple that I was a bit twitchy about, but one has to draw the line at some point.

It's OK, the trolls are now under control... I think.
There seems to still be an out of tune tine on the music box though.
Should all be sorted today though :)

Over The Other Side

As you read this somewhat verbose missive, you get the uncanny (albeit accurate) feeling that it's principle function is to wrest your attention from other - arguably more important - matters. However, continue reading and you will become aware that the title of this topic is also the title of a som...

Re: Improvising : how much thinking theory how much memory muscle visual hearing memory

I have no idea how I do it. Some times it just happens, other times it doesn't. The only thing I'm sure of is that it doesn't work if I sit down with the intention of composing something new.

Re: How to tell when a guitar is too expensive

I think the only things I have that don't have a specific practical use they were bought for, are the pictures on the walls. Almost all of those were bought from the artists on my travels - so in a sense, their 'purpose' is/was to support the artists.
