I really don't get why those SOS blokes have to make it all seem so difficult

For everything after the recording stage: hardware/software and how you use it.

I really don't get why those SOS blokes have to make it all seem so difficult

Post by Andi »

Quick search on the web and I found this in a guide to vocal mixing- all seems much simpler now.

"..... It is highly important to EQ first using this setting :

Cut 200 Hz (high pass filter)= -6dB
Boost 3000Hz Q = 1 = 3dB
Boost 15000Hz Q = 1 = 3dB

Take note that if you take the summation of cut and boost, it is literally equal to zero, it cut 6dB and I boost 6dB. So only EQ effect overall, the frequency response change, NOT the volume."

Think I might cancel my copy of Mike's book, probably don't need it now ;)

Damn, this is it. This is what I've been missing.

All my mixes just slot into place now. Gotta make this setting in a "Mo' Betterizer" plugin quick and rake it in before everyone else discovers it..!

Hey!! You aren't being fair here Andi....

Teasing us all with a few hints from the web, but keeping the URL to yourself. I bet there are a few more HOT tips and mix essentials you found on that site that would benefit us all..

Come on mate, give us the real deal, not just the tempters ;)

You don't have to write songs. The world doesn't want you to write songs. It would probably prefer it if you didn't. So write songs if you want to. Otherwise, please don't bore us with beefing about it. Go fishing instead.

That's ridiculous, all the professionals round here know that:

Cut 190Hz by -5.8 dB
Boost 3150Hz by 3.2dB
Boost 25000Hz by 2.8dB

Why can't these people get it right.

Oh this is regardless of the mic, preamp, vocalist, or whether the power is turned on or off.

The SOS lads should really stick to basics IMHO - plug it in, switch it on, trawl the net.................

Doesn't this fool know that you use EQ to make things louder when you can't push the faders up any higher and there's no make-up gain left on the compressor?

Oh I've been doing it wrong. I always thought the secret to good mixing was: Green light, green light, green light, yellow light. Ooh red light! better turndown a bit.

"Believe it or not, a vocal does not need serious effects like other instruments."

SNAP. See i've always been concerned with getting a really good sound before I even touch an EQ. What a fool! All I need are some serious effects :lol::lol:.

I might even make my own plug in range called SERIOUS EFFECTS. Watch out UA, you've been way off the mark!

Oh man I just tried it.

That problem track I'd been working on has just been signed and they've given me a £1,000,000 advance.

Then I won the lottery for this Saturday before it was even drawn.

Popped down the shop for a pint of milk and Jessica Alba is working part time there and she wants to go out on a date. Told the wife and she's fine with it.

And then I won a Neve 88 desk but I think I might send it back as I don't really need it now I know this.

Thanks for the tip it really has made everything better...wow :headbang:

My thanks for that. As a folky I get all these unaccompanied solo singers to record and I could never make my recordings loud enough for them. Now I'll be able to make them put a finger in both ears.

I'm really feeling 'To my two Little Rats'

To my two little rats
I understand
That you live with us now
And you can't talk but you have a sense of smell
To my two little rats
You're free to live with me
You're life is like a man?
And you can't talk but you have a sense of smell
To my two little rats, to my little to my two two little etc.
You're free to live, free to live, free to live in my room
Stay away of cats outside
To my two little rats you eat my shirts and fans
And you ask to apologise
But you woken up but you're shy to look at me
Two little, to to my little, to my little rats etc.
You're free to live, free to live, free to live in my room
Come and play in my room at night
I enjoy you watching a light
Rolling in my ? at night
I'm afraid to let you go just because I love you so
Two little, to to my little, to my little rats etc.

Guys you've got it all wrong!! This guy from the confidence-inspiring "expert village" will tell you how to do it.

Just remember 2 things, "don't put more than 4 on the compression" and "you might want to add a little EQ"
