Vocal Treatment On Clapton's "Let It Rain"
Vocal Treatment On Clapton's "Let It Rain"
Any ideas on the engineering treatment used on the lead vocal of Eric Clapton's "Let It Rain"? It's such a fresh smooth sound, which is clearly partly due to his vocal sound and performance, but the engineering perfectly compliments and enhances Eric's considerable singing talents.

Sounds to me as though it's double or possibly triple-tracked. You can hear that fairly clearly in the verse beginning about 1'50, where the double-tracking is a bit looser.

Yes the extra vocals really lift it. Unison plus high harmony lines I hear.

In 2006, Clapton said the only thing he didn't like about the (eponymous Eric Clapton) album is his voice, because it sounds so "high" and "young", which Clapton disliked, because he always wanted to sound like an old guy.
Reliably fallible.

Actually those are the very qualities I like about this vocal, although I am a fan of all of Eric's singing, including the more manly growling sound. But for this song his fresh open singing is just beautiful.

Yes, it's very subtle, but I can just hear it. I thought that it might be double tracking, but I could not distinguish the different voices. Perhaps Eric's phrasing and timing is that precise that he can get it very exact.
