Logic 10.4 Released

Post by muzines »

As some predicted!

Sierra minimum requirement, damn it!

You can now undo mixer actions, new and updated plugins, new content, lots of things there...

Sierra as a minimum?? That's frustrating!

My Mac Pro won't update past 10.11 as it's classed as obsolete now, even though it's an 8 core machine. I guess it's one step closer to the scrap heap now then! :(

Meanwhile, after that huge list of Logic enhancements, Avid today also release their new version of Pro Tools 2018.

Features are:

- Track Presets enabling quick preset browsing to build sessions on the fly.

- New playlist comping workflows to save valuable screen real estate, and provide the ability to edit grouped tracks with ease and work quickly from Waveform view.

- The ability to easily convert sessions to cloud-enabled product files for faster collaboration.

- Mix Window EQ Graphs to intuitively display the combined EQ effects inserted on a track.

Exciting!

Agree with that. Me and El Cap seem to get on together quite well. Oh well, not ready for an upgrade yet, I think I'll hold off 10.4 for a little bit. There's some cool stuff there, though, I have to say. Undo mixer actions, hey? And as a Melodyne user the ARA bit is very interesting.

I would be happy enough to go to Sierra now *except* Sierra kills support for garbage collection, which means none of the Redmatica stuff will run, and I absolutely will not let go of Keymap Pro...

I don't really want to maintain a whole dual-boot system just for one app, and nor do I really want to run it in a VM either (although I suppose that might be the best option)...

Just did some googling around and I see your issue. Unfortunate. Hope there's a pain free resolution to this one for you.

If its an early 2009 mac pro 4,1 you can update the firmware to 5,1 and it will then take sierra and high sierra. I just did the exact thing for a client and it worked like a charm.

Tomorrow I am going to try and update a 2008 model up to sierra using dosdue patcher.

This might get some folks another few years.

So 10.4 is only sierra. Does anybody know if I buy pro X whether i can download 10.3 to run on my Mac Pro 8 core as I am running El Capitan.

Also, When you install Pro X does it put all the support files in app support, like with pro 9 etc,
or is everything stored within the app package?

Very true. I was looking into it before but then though I might only be delaying the inevitable for a short time...

I might revisit the idea when I have some more money. Unlike Demond, I don't have any legacy software that I'd lose if I did go to Sierra, so it would be quite painless (hopefully).

Thanks for the reminder!

As far as I remember, the App store will show you the last compatible version of Logic for your OS when you buy it. But don't take my word for it. You could try contacting them, or searching in the support docs/forums to see if someone has asked that question before (which I imagine they have).

Thanks

LPX still supports the App Support stuff as before, but the preferred location for most stuff now is ~/Music/Audio Music Apps

Well I'm looking at the App Store page for Logic and it says "Compatibility: macOS 10.12 or later". It's not offering me an upgrade either. Sorry.

If you don’t have 10.12, then your version of Logic will top out at 10.3.3, and that’s the version the App Store will give you. So you can still buy, and run Logic from the App Store, but *10.4* requires Sierra.

So why does the the logic Pro 10.4 system requirement notes say minimum 10.11, and app store on my mac say 10.12 and app store on my iPhone say 10.11?

Oh for goodness sake:

Apple site:
https://www.apple.com/logic-pro/specs/
Stated requirement: 10.12

App Store page (UK):
10.12 or later

Anywhere else, I expect the text hasn't been updated yet, or the various caches haven't updated in what you are seeing.

Logic 10.4 requires Sierra. It doesn't run on El Cap (I tried).
It doesn't run on El Cap even when you hack the package to say 10.11 is a minimum requirement.

How many more times do you need somewhere to tell you 10.4 requires Sierra..? :headbang:

I’m thinking of testing it out on my Sierra system today to see how it runs.

Just said to myself - what the hell - and upgraded tom El Capitan to High Sierra on both my MBP and MBA and installed LPX 10.4. All seems stable - all plugins fine and my apprehension -

Sibelius 7.5...runs fine
Adobe Audition CS6...runs fine
MAudio Drivers for Profire2626 and AudiophileUSB... still recognised by the OS

though I still need to stress test all of those.

I'm also doing a part time PhD in astronomy and need NASA / Heasarc FITS Tools to run (which rely upon a 3rd party X-Windows emulation (XQuartz)) and they all work too (phew!!)

....now to check out all those lovely 10.4 features :-)

(though Apple - get your act together and enable recognition of MIDI Interfaces and Ports into the Sequencer - it's RIDICULOUS that we still have to endure 1985 Atari Cubase levels of Live MIDI recording!!).
