Mac Mini 2018....which display monitor?

Post by Big Scottish Bloke »

Hi all!

It's been a while, hope you're all well!

So I've had my iMac for 9 years next year.

Starting to think about the replacement, and I reckon the 2018 mac mini is my best choice, in terms of bangs for buck.

I also feel with the new iMacs i'm paying for a lush 5k display which frankly I'm not fussed about..I'm a pro muso using Cubase 10 and, sure, i want it to look clear and sharp and not tire my eyes, but 5k I can live without..

So what monitor do I get for it? I quite fancy a 32 inch (oo-er missus, etc etc) but can I still get clarity at that size? Is it better to stick to a 27 inch?

And also any mac mini users out there?! I've heard of a few problems with USB interfaces? Also some problems with certains monitors?

Would appreciate any thoughts- thanks all! 8-)

I have an ancient mini I use on occasion, but I mainly use PC. I much prefer two monitors myself, and the mini will easily run two, even mismatched ones.

"The Best" piece of gear is subjective.

I'm on a PC rather than Mac, but for what it's worth I'm a very happy user of Cubase 10 on a 32" screen at 2560x1440 resolution - no problem whatsoever with clarity/legibility.

I have a 2012 quadi7 Mini, and currently transitioning to a i7 6-core Mini.
Using Logic X.

I use a 27 inch curved Samsung monitor, suits my needs.

Thanks for the replies everyone!
Logarhythym, can I ask... what brand and model is your monitor? Any more specs? Pixels and stuff?!

G- Doubleyou- what model is your Samsung and any reason for the curved screen?

Thanks!

It's a Philips 328E9FJAB (I think) with a QHD (2560x1440) curved screen. Not particularly expensive or fancy, but I don't do any gaming or graphics work.
Feels like a lot of clear screen real estate for the price. I wasn't sure about the curved screen at first but now rather like it.
I'd say you're welcome to try it with Cubase in situ (really hard to find physical shops with a decent stock of screens these days!) but I'm a long way from Edinburgh!

Hi,

I've just changed to a 2018 Mac mini and I went to PC World and bought a Samsung 32" (31.5") 4K screen:

https://www.samsung.com/uk/monitors/uhd-u32j590/

It's running at 3840x2160 resolution, which I really like for running Logic on. I didn't go for a curved one as I heard a while back that it can affect the monitoring position as it's directing the sound back at you, but I have no idea if that's actually true in reality.

The screen isn't height adjustable but there are VESA mount holes so the stand can be swapped out.

I've had no problems with it and would buy another if it did die. It has an auto input switching option, that I've turned off, but it still flashes up that it's received a signal on HDMI (what I use) halfway through the boot up, before it gets to the login screen. It's not a fault at all, but the screen goes black for a second then back on which was a bit disconcerting to start with.

Hope that helps

Thanks
J

For reference, that has a similar look as 1920x1080 on a 24" screen which for me is ideal.
For 4K at native resolution I'd need a 40" monitor.

Yes, I'd have needed to go overly large to move to 4K - having previously been at 1920x1080 on a 24" screen this is visually pretty much a direct translation, but more of it ;)

It's a C27F390, No reason for the curved screen.

I've had good luck with the brand, it was on sale.

Took a couple of weeks to get used to the curve though, really didn't have room for a bigger one.
