Echo Audio Mia MIDI and Windows 10

Post by twotoedsloth »

Greetings all,

Is anyone successfully running an Echo Audio Mia MIDI successfully in Windows 10? There is a Windows 7 driver, and I am currently running Windows 8.1 with no problems, but the IT dept at work wants us all to update to Windows 10.

Thanks,

Peter

Felicitations,

For any owner of an Echo Mia MIDI, it installs and works normally in Windows 10.

I'm good for another couple of years!

It really is amazing that a 15 year old piece of hardware still works. Maybe we should start a thread of ancient and elderly yet still functional hardware. The other obvious candidate is the MOTU 828 Firewire, which has current drivers as well.

Has anyone got a Yamaha SW1000XG still working or an Mackie Onyx 400f?

If not, any [polite] suggestions as to what I should do with mine? :?

Greetings,

We have a Mackie Onyx 400F, but we use it as strictly a mic preamp. We used a Windows XP machine to "program" the interface, routing each of the 4 mic preamps directly to the analog 1-4 line outs. We haven't tried to use the 400F as a firewire interface in Windows 10 (also Vista, 7, or 8).

I'm not sure you'll have much luck getting the Yamaha sound card working in a modern computer. The SW1000XG requires a 5 volt PCI slot, most modern computers have 3.3 volt PCI slots, if they even have PCI slots.

Sorry I don't have more information for you,

And if none of that makes any sense to anyone, here's a PC Notes I wrote way back in SOS December 2004 on the topic of PCI problems (particularly with soundcards):

Thanks for the comments, guys.

I guess that is one of drawbacks of making music on the computer. As Operating Systems and PC standards change both software and hardware become obsolete quite quickly. A guitar amp from 1966 might still work but a peripheral from 2006 probably not!

I suppose I could try to sell the Onyx to someone still using Vista or XP, but the SW1000XG is heading for the bin! :frown:

Mine's still in a box - after so many years of excellent service in my previous PCs I can't bear to throw it out

You could potentially fit the Yamaha sound card into an older PC and sync them up by MIDI, and you'd have essentially an external MIDI sound module.

In regards to the Onyx 400F, it should not be difficult to find a buyer. Even as a stand alone 4 channel mic preamp, it has value.

According to this thread, you can run the Onyx 400F in Windows 10 if you use the Vista driver.

It's worth a try!

You might list your Swonky in the "For Sale" section over on ds2416.org. ;)
