Partitioning SATA drive

Hello Peeps,

I have a Scan 17" 3XS laptop with a 256GB SSD plus 2 1TB SATA drives for AV and Samples/Data respectively.

I also have a lighter 15" laptop with a 256GB SSD plus 1 2TB SATA. Is it OK to partition the latter drive to replicate the 17" setup? It makes transferring projects and iTunes etc. easier if all the sample and media links refer to the same location.

If you mean partitioning the SSD drive on the laptop to accomodate the data on the 3XS laptop then that should be fine.

Personally I'd probably not bother with the partitioning and just create two folders on the non-3XS laptop, one for each drive on the 3XS but that wouldn't replicate the drive letters of course (do they matter that much for backups?)

It's fine to do that if it helps your management of data.

Thanks guys, yes it's partitioning the 2 TB SATA into two 1 TBs.

I assume a modern drive can cope with the sample loading/playing and audio streaming with no probs.

The CPUs and 16GB RAM all cope fine too.

It depends entirely on your workload.
If by SATA you mean SATA SSD as opposed to SATA HDD then that will help a lot.

Ah...good point...it's a Samsung SATA HDD...

Yes indeed, I was successfully mapping my OneDrive as an entirely separate virtual E: Drive on bootup. Subfolders here can then be redirected to other folders.

However, Native Instruments Komplete for example does not allow for virtual drives.

I can feel a new strategy evolving if partitioning an HDD is potentially unwise?

BTW the 2 TB drive crashed so until Scan replace it I have an opportunity to rethink.

In terms of workload I probably load 16 or so audio tracks from one disk and usually only bass, organ and piano samples from the NI folder, EZDrummer on the other plus the usual NI, Sonar, Izotope plugins.

Doesn't sound too much for a 16GB RAM, 2.2GHz i7?
