Volca Sample Manager

Post by Andy Cobley »

I've just come across this tool:

http://www.frederikson-labs.com/

Manages Samples and Patterns for the Volca Sample. So far it's looking a lot more powerful than at first glance.

Very, very cool - thanks for sharing. I wonder why it's free? (But I don't wonder too much or too long - downloading now...)

Plus a forum! Nice.

He could be a morsel of his former self.

Playing around with it, I've found you can edit patterns, change sample settings and upload them to the Volca. Should make pattern creation so easy !

It's actually a whole Volca Sample emulator on your PC/Mac. You don't need the Sample. Although it probably doesn't fully emulate the Sample's lo-fi DAC. :)

Best of all it's super easy to enter the motion control data for creating melodic bass and lead sequences. (Doing that on the Sample requires a tricky three-finger wiggle!)

I'm assuming it uses the Volca Sample SDK :

https://github.com/korginc/volcasample

But its still a magnificent piece of work !

It does raise a couple of questions though:

1: I wonder if the other Volca’s support the same method of pattern data download. If they don’t I wonder if Korg will add them in a firmware update. Similar software for the other Volca’s would be most welcome !

2: If you read the documentation on the SDK source page, there are two unused parameters:

uint16_t Accent;
this parameter cannot be operated on the volca sample. Must be set to 0.
uint8_t Level;
this parameter cannot be operated on the volca sample. Must be set to 127.

Which implies that the pattern data can be used for some other unknown machine.
