Hammond XK-5: does this glitch seem hardware or software related to you?

Post by Steven11 »

Hi there,

A couple of weeks ago I got a Hammond XK-5, and I'm in love with it.

There has been a couple of times, though, that a glitch popped up and, having still a few days before the Thomann "no question asked return"'s limit expires, I am wondering whether I should worry about it or not.

I am basically experiencing the same bug as this guy: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1601822 ... 401876913/

With a difference: when it happens, I'm not scrolling through patches with the knob but I am jumping between presets with the reversed colour preset keys. This has happened a couple of times and I was jumping between presets rather quickly.

I am aware there used to be a bug that caused hang notes precisely while jumping between presets, but it seems it has been fixed with subsequent firmware releases. I haven't experienced stuck notes anyway.

The problem with this instrument is that there is so little information on forums, probably because it's a niche instrument and few people own it. So I am a bit lost as to what to do.

If it's a firmware glitch, it's OK: it will be fixed sooned or later and even if it doesn't get fixed I can definitely live with it.

If it's a hardware related problem, I'd better soon return it to Thomann and get a new one.

My istinct is that it's a software bug, so I wouldn't want to return it for no reason.

Is there anyone here more experienced in electronics than me who could give his informed impression on what this could be?

Thank you

I think it's a firmware glitch as it's hard to imagine a hardware fault that would lead to that kind screen menu recall error... but best to contact Hammond about it directly, with all the info you can above the precise actions that cause the erroneous display.

I doubt you'll find many XK5 owners here to test their own instrument for the same reaction, though. It seems to be rather a niche product, but one I really envy you for!

Thanks Hugh,
yes indeed, I had imagined I won't find many XK5 users around to test their own...

Today I sat down for three hours at it, playing and tweaking things in the menu, changing presets a lot... the erroneous pop up never showed up. So it's kind of hard to know what the exact sequence is that is causing it -- I doubt there is an *exact* sequence by the way. The guy in the video has it happening while turning the main knob, I have had it with presets button...

As far as the instrument itself is concerned, as I told you I had secretly "lurked" at it for a couple of months, feeling occasionally guilty for wanting to spend that much on a keyboard, but then also too allured to stop thinking about it... so at the end I went for it and I feel much lighter now, bank account included!

Add me to the list of lurkers. A lot of money, but a very tempting machine....

Sent an email to Hammond Europe.
Not sure how efficient their afterservice is, but I'll find out.

By the way, the European website lists 3.3 as the latest firmware, whereas the American counterpart says it's 3.1 the latest. I read the changelog and 3.2 and 3.3 don't seem to contain European-specific fixes, if that makes sense. So I'm not sure why they haven't updated the American site.

Now the bug must be older than 3.1 anyway, since the guy on the Facebook thread pointed that out 3 years ago, but I am wondering if something got fixed and then re-introduced along the way...
