Zoom H5 - First Impressions

Post by Mike Stranks »

So; I've had it less than 24 hours and I'm still at the 'just experimenting' stage...

I wanted a recorder that had decent preamps for recording with dynamic mics, decent on-board mics which could record in true stereo rather than some lame attempt and something that was generally up to simple broadcast-quality work...

So far it's ticking the boxes...

* Good stereo imaging; the built-in mics seem at the least acceptable; I'll try some serious evaluation later.
* The XLR inputs are good. Just tried them with a fairly close-worked Beyer 201 - which is known to have a low output - and they passed with flying colours. Nary a hint of the hiss that bedevils the H4n and similar offerings.
* Reassuringly chunky in the hand, but not so much as to make it awkward to handle.
* Handling noise is still an issue despite the 'rubberised' coating and the shock-mounted mics. I'm awaiting deliver of a Rycote Lyre for it so that should improve things considerably.
* I like the rotary gain dials... so much better than up/down buttons.
* Comes with a neat little plastic wrap-round case (like the H4n) which should keep it safe in transit.

I shall keep my Tascam DR03 for interview work where I don't want to be too obtrusive with nervous interviewees. The H5 will fill the gap nicely between the little Tascam and my current Tascam DR-680 - soon to be replaced with a Zoom F8 subject to no duff reviews... :D

That's great to hear, Mike. I have one on my list to replace my H4 and an endorsement from you goes a long way.

I have to say the H5 looks thoroughly techy, and as you know appearances go a long way with me :)

Just discovered the first 'Hmmm...' this morning.

You can only use the -12dB 'back-up' recording facility if you're using the built-in mics.

But's that being nit-picky for an old Uher warrior! :D

If there's an SoS meet in the offing I'll be happy to bring it and it's accoutrements for 'show and tell'

... and the F8 if it's been purchased then...

Sorry; can't contemplate arranging a SoS meet at present - selling TWO houses... ours and the late mum-in-law's....

Had my H5 for about 6 months now and absolutley love it

It has proved itself many times for gig recordings and as a decent recorder to accompany my GoPros.

I shall be using it at the meet next weekend for capturing audio

I bought one a few months ago, specifically to record a radio play to be made available on download. The sound quality was really excellent, far better than I was expecting.

The dialogue scenes and many of the sound effects were recorded via the built-in microphones in a variety of internal and external locations. The two-voice narration was recorded in a studio with Rode microphones feeding the H5's XLR inputs. After layering up the tracks and mixing, it was clear that the whole thing was of broadcast quality. So much so that I am considering shaving a few minutes off the duration in order to offer it to the Radio 4 Afternoon Play slot.

One of my sons is a professional violinist. We made a few test recordings with the H5, using the built-in mics. We were both surprised at how accurate the sound was and will be making further recordings with the device.

So, yes, I am very pleased and will be recording more plays with it in the new year.

Location recording today... somewhat compromised due to high wind...

Zoom H5 on boom pole;
Rycote Shockmount specifically for H5;
Rycote Dead Kitten specifically for H5;
Internal mics, Manual levels;
Recorded flat with subsequent HPF for really obtrusive wind blast and DAW limiting.

Very nice detailed recording. In spite of that wind blast everything came through cleanly.

Seemingly no longer an 'elderly'.
Now a 'Senior'. Is that promotion?

Mike, thanks for posting this review along with the audio. Thought it did quite well under the conditions you described. Very timely as I too, was needing something to record along with the GoPro and/or mount on my DSLR. I think you'll be pleased with the Rycote mount in taking out those bumps from the boom pole.
