I wanted a recorder that had decent preamps for recording with dynamic mics, decent on-board mics which could record in true stereo rather than some lame attempt and something that was generally up to simple broadcast-quality work...
So far it's ticking the boxes...
* Good stereo imaging; the built-in mics seem at the least acceptable; I'll try some serious evaluation later.
* The XLR inputs are good. Just tried them with a fairly close-worked Beyer 201 - which is known to have a low output - and they passed with flying colours. Nary a hint of the hiss that bedevils the H4n and similar offerings.
* Reassuringly chunky in the hand, but not so much as to make it awkward to handle.
* Handling noise is still an issue despite the 'rubberised' coating and the shock-mounted mics. I'm awaiting deliver of a Rycote Lyre for it so that should improve things considerably.
* I like the rotary gain dials... so much better than up/down buttons.
* Comes with a neat little plastic wrap-round case (like the H4n) which should keep it safe in transit.
I shall keep my Tascam DR03 for interview work where I don't want to be too obtrusive with nervous interviewees. The H5 will fill the gap nicely between the little Tascam and my current Tascam DR-680 - soon to be replaced with a Zoom F8 subject to no duff reviews...
