Very usable sounds for a demo - already used 2 on a track now out on an ambient album, within a week of downloading! Workstation sounds - quality programming. AU, VST, RTAS, MAS. :)

Haven't tried it yet and I've never used the Waves L1 either...

There are also some free OS X VST instruments on the same site - various piano modules and a bass. They aren't editable and I've only heard the Windows version, but free is free...

Be aware that some of these AUs won't be validated under the latest (10.4.9) version of OS X - da Hornet & SupaPhaser are among them.

That list is awesome! I've been compiling a list of some of my favorite freeware effects and instruments here:

Free Stuff

It's all stuff that's on the dontcrack list, but maybe it'll narrow down the process of weeding through it (though that's half the fun sometimes).

For any newbies out there I've also posted a couple blogs about installing and using freeware plug-ins here:

This may sound like a dumb question however how do you get the plug in to show up in Pro Tools after you have downloaded them?

I download them and they don't show up. I tried putting the little icon into the Pro tools plug in alias folder but that didn't work either. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

All the freebies I've had for Pro Tools have had an installer that does the lot. Make sure the plug is UB if you've got an Intel Mac, as PPC plugins just won't show up.

Sorry if you know this, but Pro Tools LE/M-Powered will only accept RTAS plugins, not AU. You can select to filter to RTAS plugins on Don'tCrack. :headbang:

you need the right sort of plug in.... the majority are AU "audio units" for Logic .... for PT you need RTAS plug ins, or you need Fxpansion's VST to RTAS wrapper./

you can;lt just dump them in a folder and expect them to work if they're not RTAS plugs.

Mostly Retired from Audio.... If I already know you I'll help,  if not....    Ask Hugh Robjohns, unless that is you're in need of 80's shred guitar... that, I'm still interested in having fun with...

I've been using this limiter quite a lot and I find it neutral and unobtrusive. Suits my purposes quite well.

Here's a cool little free compressor from SSL:

http://www.solid-state-logic.com/resources/lmc1plugin.html

No UB version, though.

I've been having fun with these 20+ odd plug-ins, and they are UB:

http://www.michaelnorris.info/soundmagicspectral/

On the ones that have the option, try lowering the FFT to 512 to reduce latency. Some of them have been a little "crashy" in Live 6.

At www.ffnn.nl/pages/projects/audio-units/legacy-versions.php you'll find 3 UB AU's for free. The only catch is that they are no longer supported because there are updated commercial versions (but at only $10 each, if you like the free ones, consider buying the new v.2 plug-ins to support the developers). The plug-ins on offer are -

Diatonic Shifter v.1.x - Eventide-style pitch-shifting/harmonizer

Octave Shifter v.1.x - Real-time pitch-shifting +/- 1 octave

Reverse Sampler v.1.x - Gapless, semi-real time reverse playback, auto crossfades, sample (delay) 0.1 to 10 seconds

Then there's the free UB AU distortion plug-in FuzzPluss v.2.2 at www.audiodamage.com

CamelCrusher - UB AU distortion/multi-fx at www.camelaudio.com

u-he's Triple Cheese - UB AU instrument at www.u-he.com

KR-Phaser v.1.2.1 - UB AU -analog-style phaser effect www.kresearch.com

Hi-

I am a pro composer/musician, working for 3 USA networks, so my list of plug ins is embarissingly deep and way too expensive, but in many ways, the most inspiring plug in I have ever used in terms of creating new ideas's from static grooves is a free plug in called Live Cut, from Mcdsp software.....combined Livecut with a drum groove generator like Stylus RMX, EZDrummer, etc. is just fantastic...the comapny asks for a donation, and i sent them 30 bucks, thinking i was insulting them, but was told in a reply that that was the most they had ever received, so a 5 dollar paypal transfer would make you both happy. its still free if you choose not to, but once you try it, you will want to help them develop this great tool even more
it is basically a low cpu drain AU/VST plug-in used as an audio track insert (in DP mixer at least) that takes any audio on that channel and slices it up in real time...it has a ton of controls to modify, randomize and repeat the slices, as well as a "Squarepusher" contol for the truly adventurest jungle/D&B/chill/trance madman in you.....it never fails to amaze me what comes out of it, and you can record it free form as you dial away and then edit the best bits....works on any audio, and as a sidebenefit, when used with Stylus RMX; it mutes the output of stylus rmx when you stop or pause DP. hit play and you are back to groovin. I believe you can search for it in SOS, as they gave it a very nice mini review a few months ago
imho, it's just an Amazing Drum & Bass tool, and it beats the heck out of improvising ideas over a static 2 bar drum loop.
Beta bugs chorus is another nice fx, as is Crystal synth....i wish they would charge for crystal and put the money into even more developement, so get it while it is still free.
hope this is of some help. good luck

The Delta Series are very cool - nice phaser, delay, distortion, etc. VST only though.

Chris Johnson created some excellent free AU plug-ins along with his commercial (but still extremely affordable) releases.

Hi
AudioUnit Manager 1.1 - donationware

Quote:
"AudioUnit Manager provides a simple way to organize AudioUnits into sets so users can load just the AudioUnits they need for a particular application. This can mean accelerated application launch times and exclusion of incompatible AudioUnits for some hosts."
