How much better is Cubase 5 over the original Cubase 5.1?

Post by Glenn Bucci »

In looking at the Sound on Sound Cubase 5.1 review, it is interesting to see how far they have come with their product.

There are 11 things about Cubase 5 that are important to me over the original 5.1 version.

1. The sound engine has been improved which gives better performance and sound of your recordings.
2. Much better plug ins making it easier not to run to 3rd party plug ins.
3. Being able to switch the order of effects has always been a big one for me.
4. Midi functions have improved.
5. Tempo,and marker track improvements.
6. Improved bus capabilities.
7. Audio Warping
8. Play Order track
9. Freeze
10. Project Page improvements including better automation control.
11. Side Chain capabilities

Though all these improvements and others are very good, even if they stopped improving DAW's since 2000, we still would be able to make very good recordings today.

What other features do you really appreciate in that are in Cubase 5 that were not offered back then?

I assume you're comparing VST 5 to Cubase 5 yes?

If so
Reverence reverb
Integration with MR816
Ability to use multicore processors
Halion one not bad

Disagree about the effects though, the only cubase plugins I use are the channel EQ (to cut only) and the gate.

Yes VST 5 to Cubase 5.

I found the studio chorus, and delays are much improved in Cubase 5, as well as the vintage compressor, and multiband compressor. Studio EQ is up there with my Cambrdige EQ too, though it does not look as nice. :D

As for effects the phaser is good. It has a distinctive smooth sound.
I used it as a working stop-gap on my guitar on my present project before I reamped it through my Mutron Bi-Phase. Now I have the guitar through the Bi-Phase I have left the Cubase phaser on because it sounds not as good without it.
Also in my present project the instant transposition of audio is so handy. Just snip the note and a flick of the scroll wheel. I've altered some bass notes and they still sound natural.

Control Room. Absolutely the best thing to be added to Cubase since the Atari days.

wow - remember that release with some fondness - and the note about us having to swap out the old v3 dongles for the new blue ones was great fun..

I also remember the tour we did to launch, and got caught out in the midlands when the fuel strike hit..

I don't work with Steinberg any more, but they've done a great job in a lot of ways when you look back and compare..

Yeah. Shame they ditched the promised bug fixes for all of us who invested in a buggy SX 3, and with a wonderful announcement in the Steinberg forums?

True, and not having a dig at you Stephen as you have always provided an exemplary service and a top bloke at that, but it turned a lot of us off.

I stopped buying any more versions after that fiasco.

Timewarp and Audio warp.

Timewarp to match a tempo map to video, including any already recorded ideas and audio warp to deal with (my) sloppy guitar playing...

Bussing! Cubase can finally now mix with the big boys when it comes to routing your audio around. I thought I'd use the sidechaining more than I have but when I do need it, I need it.

Ooh! Ooh! And being able to move inserts around at will! That's the bit I HATE when I have to go back to SX3 in some studios - :madas:!

And lets not forget the side-chain function.

Man, what a workaround in SX3.....
